Catch and release! Even the people who either just want to show off or make money must realise that live big marlin, big reef fish etc. are an investment in the future, attracting catch and release fishermen, scuba divers and other tourists for our future generations. These kill tournaments might make a certain type feel good about themselves when the press, politicians and the ignorant gawp, but we need to change that and make them as shamed as they would be for posing with a lynched cahow or turtle or dolphin in front of a mulitimillion dollar stinkpot.

Yeah that’s real scientific. They have been declared endangered due to overfishing. There’s a cost for our ignorance and it can’t be fixed with the meager revenue generated by the tournament. These large Marlins are all females. The grow 4 times larger than a male Marlin.

What do you think happens to the future of a species if the females are specifically targeted every year in tournaments like this all over the world?

You certainly don’t have to be a scientific to figure that one out.

The reason that Bermuda always has the biggest fish is because everywhere else is OVERfished. So why would we want to encourage more people to come and deplete our oceans? While the occasional sport tournament is okay, an increase in fishing activity would lead to less fish (DUH)! If anything we should be promoting fish farm development. We have plenty of other options for increasing tourism – leave the environment out of it!
