There’s no hole like Devil’s Hole, there’s no county like Cleveland County and there’s definitely no Mayor like Colin Smith, the self-appointed mayor of Devil’s Hole. Amazingly Smith predicted correctly on February 8th of this year (see the video on youtube ) that after a 32 year “drought” Cleveland would regain the much coveted Eastern Counties Trophy on July 19th. So said so done!!! What Smith did not foretell however was whether or not they would retain it throughout the second and final rounds? That is the challenge which lies ahead for CCCC, while it is a major achievement to win the Trophy retaining it can be much more difficult.

This Saturday they will be up against a very strong Bailey’s Bay team which will likely include Cup Match centurion Tarayn Fray, Tre Manders, Rodney Trott, Kyle Hodsoll and Lateef Trott. Bay have under achieved in regular league play this season and will be anxious to make amends by winning county, the fact that the match will be played on their home field should also give them confidence. Whether Cleveland under the guidance of coach Clay Smith can see off Bay’s challenge remains to be seen. The retention of the trophy this year for Cleveland is important as it can act as the foundation upon which they can build themselves into a stronger unit and begin becoming serious contenders for the league, knock-out and other major trophies. On the other hand a win for Bay could be the catalyst they need to turn around a disappointing season. I know my good friend staunch Bailey’s Bay supporter ‘Milly’ Hill is hoping so. In any event it should be a good game but whatever the result don’t forget those ‘Saucy Dogs’ from Flatts Victoria are waiting in the wings.
