Any informal agreement with the US relating to usage of the lands after they left in 1995, does not negate the abysmal job the PLP did in negotiating their formal return in ’98/’99. The terms of their return as Bermuda soil fell entirely to the PLP, and it is mess that will persist for years to come. I know those on the US negotiating team who are surprisingly ecstatic with the terms the PLP gave them, but also feel a degree of sorrow toward what they left with Bermuda, but then it wasn’t their job to look out for the interests of Bermudians, that was supposed to the PLP’s. All parties knew that there was an environmental condition survey report coming, it was entirely on the PLP for not waiting for its results, instead they let the US break, with zero accountability for clean up. There is no other way to slice it, the fact that the government has to clean up the mess at the former base lands falls entirely on the PLP, but we know you will keep trying to deflect.

For the love of God can we PLEASE just get this project moving! If Mr Brangman or ANYONE on this project proves incapable they will be quickly annexed and a replacement hired. That’s how business people do things. Unlike the PLP, real business people look after their bottom line. Now can we all just please move on… nothing to see here.

I personally had submitted bids for the opening of a laundry mat in summer 1996

The BLDC gave it to UBP stalwart Walter Cross that summer

I dont see anything productive in making this an issue of “friends and family” as those dynamics are almost inescabable in lil ole Bermuda.

Perhaps the better starting point is giving credit to Morgans Point Ltd for its ‘Bermudianization’ of management and hope that Nalton is actually qualified to act in the capacity he’s been brought into.

We can scream friends and family until the cows come home it becomes obvious he is way out of his depth.

“However if there was no Morgans Point, there would have been a development at Southlands”. – I think you might be right there, if it hadn’t been for the PLP with their unforgivable treatment of the West Group investors then Morgans Point would have long been developed & unavailable.

Who knows; this same group may well have been ‘persuaded’ to develop another location. There’s no shortage of ‘former’ hotel properties lying vacant.

Sadly the PLP made sure that the West Group and probably many other investors steered clear of Bermuda for over a decade. Mr. Hodgson’s unwise comments (straight out of the PLP race baiting playbook) reportedly moved one of the investors to say “This is the basis on which communists proceed.”

Experience does, and since he has NO EXPERIENCE running a major project the investors will still need to engage a major project manager on performance contract

The US did pull out of the Annex in ’95, however, they didn’t return the lands until ’99 when the PLP negotiated the return of both base lands for a paltry $11m dollars. You remember, the $11m that was supposed to be for fixing the swing bridge, when a report of the environmental clean up required, the report they could wait for, estimated the clean up to be over $30m. The PLP went into the negotiations with an attitude of being some kind of international negotiating big shots, instead, Bermuda’s reputation for international affairs, a reputation built up by men like Sir John Swan, Sir Edward Richards and Sir Henry Tucker, fell to the rank of kindergarteners. Over their 14 years, with Brown’s Uighurs and Cox’s TIEA’s, they really didn’t succeed in graduating that much higher either.

If the PLP had their way South Road would be a tunnel through the Southlands property by now. Bermuda has BEST to thank for that.

If the PLP had the slightest idea of how to conduct business there would have been machines on the ground & concrete being poured at Morgans Point long ago.

Big money is not investing in a place with an unstable Government. Under the PLP big money was not touching Bermuda. The biggest coward in the world is money. It likes stability & being handled with care.

I don’t think kangoo was talking about this specific project when they said that… Think Pink Beach, Hamilton Princess, Company formations, Sonesta, etc… Compared to how many exempt companies that redomiciled under the PLP and the job losses that followed. Compared to how many hotels that shut down under the PLP. The die hard PLP supporters are forever trying to defend the indefensible and spinning anything positive into negativity, and it is getting boring.
