No, the government did that. They hired thousands of civil servants we don’t need. And paid hundreds of millions to “inner circle” overseas consultants. And built Grand Atlantic. And made property owners rich, the owners of flashy court buildings. And threw party after party. Lavish trip after lavish trip. Pockets were lined. And how did they pay for it? By spending every last penny they had, and then spending $2bn they didn’t have. They sold us and generations after us to foreign banks. We used to be financially independent; now we aren’t. All our future earnings are owned by foreign banks. The PLP sold us and generations of Bermudians to foreign banks, in return for trinkets.

The unemployed numbers have been reducing in those countries since 2009. In Bermuda we have been consistently losing jobs. Thanks to Paula etal encouring companies to leave. It was a home-grown recession. The PLPs gift to Bermuda was long-term unemployment.

Have to agree with JT on this. Our last Finance Minister did a poor job; no way of glossing it over. When Bermuda needed a sound Finance Minister, she dropped the ball. Nothing personal, just facts. If she was the CFO of a company she would have been FIRED. Recently the Premier made mention to cutting losses on money owed to the Government; the Finance Minister quickly assured this was NOT the case. Now this may be looked at as a break down in communication by the OBA, or a misunderstanding of exactly what the Premier was saying; but the Finance Minister made it CLEAR, it was NOT the case.
The Finance Minister has a job to do and will be judged at the end of the day on the job they done. NO excuses as to not having the power? If you are not able to do your job than your reputation will be tarnished because you got thrown under the bus. Our last Finance Minister can not blame others and reference being a COG. This is a Countries finances we are talking about, and our next generations will suffer for it.

You don’t have to be rich and wealthy to apply for a license and it certainly isn’t a secret to ANYONE that this is the case. Furthermore, I would expect a man that you wish to be called a “leader” would know this.

Furthermore, nobody panicked because he announced that HE smoked weed. People were outraged because he gave it to marijuana tea to a toddler!!!! Keep in mind that 20 years ago nobody knew the affects of marijuana, there was no easy access to information and studies on marijuana. He took a crap shoot with his child’s life and future! That is why people were outraged.

@Say what Now, those smoke screen distractions don’t work on most people anymore. However, if you keep your head turned long enough I guess you can say that you didn’t see it. And if you pretend you didn’t see it, you can pretend that you didn’t know.

You’re using big words but don’t seem to understand what they mean.

Most of the financial damage in other countries was done prior to 2008 and the recession for them was just the day of reckoning.

For us the damage occurred 2005-present and our true day of reckoning has yet to come (and let’s hope it doesn’t).

The debt for us was caused by over-spending to the tune of $300 million a year, the recession was caused by population decline. These are two totally separate issues.

This guy gets it. Horton won’t be running in the next election – he’s a pariah to the PLP. He also clearly loves being the speaker, and will hold on to that for as long as he can. Hundreds and hundreds have been MPs over the years, there have only been a few dozen speakers. I don’t think he’s going anywhere before the next election.

One other point: it’s a slight exaggeration to say it was 19-15 with Lister as an independent. It is true that he sometimes sided with the OBA, but on most of the big issues he lined up with the PLP. So it was really more 19 – 15 1/2.

A reporter should ask Mr. Burt what his thoughts are on Solvency II, or Common Reporting Standards, or FATCA model 1 vs 2 IGAs. I’ll bet he has no real knowledge of any of them.
