Let us not get too Arrogant again,as a short history ago tells us on a number of accasions.
Please remember the “GOLDEN RULE” he who has the “GOLD RULES”
We have an “OLD” and Declining population,and we need growth in our Ecconomy to survive.
We have approx.10,000 work permits issued,and that to me is 10,000 jobs that I and other Bermudians could apply for if Qualified with exspirence.And no one is going to come and knock on your door to “ASK” you if you would like a job.
We are very fortunate to have a country and an economy that many envy.
BUT WE HAVE TO “STOP” BORROWING $300Million per year to keep the Civil Service funded,as we are paying $160Million per year in interest(SO FAR)
until the interest rates go up.
A growing population give an economy “GROWTH”
A declining population means our economy will “DECREASE”
It is very simple don’t understand why many cannot grasp that.
Since the year of 1974 the population started for the first time to Decrease,Bermudians were having less Babies.
And the “OLD BATTLE CRY” jobs for Bermudians,how about the 10,000 jobs that are available to us.

In quoting a remark made by someone else:”Better to scrap an idea gone bad than to continue with it just because you had brought it that far. To admit it turned out to be a bad idea shows character and good judgment. Now, lets get it right”.
Here we’re seeing another example of trustworthy leadership. It’s blatantly clear, there hadn’t been any attempts to hoodwink the public. (It’s evident, the O.B.A. have / are “measuring twice before cutting once”)
I want to thank the Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy for doing what’s best possible for all Bermudians in the short as well as long run.

Of course they would want to do that, it is a huge pain to renew work permits and no one wants to replace staff if they don’t have to.

Well done Mr. Fahy. One would look increasingly foolish taking the position that your’re an agent of foreigners who doesnt put the interests of Bermudians first rather than, more accurately, an agent of Bermudians and foreigners that care about the well being of this island.

What proof do you have that there was no consultation? They clearly said at the onset that as part of the process, the unions, Gov., various I&B groups and other stake holders (including, I believe Walton Brown) were all included. Don’t let facts get in the way of dirty politics.

Well said Val! We all have a vested interest in getting this right and as you say, finding the right balance. These are very difficult times here and people seem to want someone to blame for their problems and use the work permit policy as a scape goat.

Excellent, courageous decision made with integrity.

I saw first-hand how the last interpretation of that immigration policy was greatly abused, i.e. the ‘key employees’ policy was the backbone that created wildcat strikes, demonstrations and general labour unrest.

To find the balance between the expectations of those who wanted the BEV policy enacted against a very tiny group who advocated against it, you actively sought out all types of consultations and listened to the arguments that articulated, why and how that policy would have a devastating affected on professional Bermudians.

Your final decision, Senator Fahy, has struck the proportional balance between foreign and Bermudians professionals in a fair and just manner.

I say this with great humility and respect, so few have Bermuda’s interests at heart and clearly you are one of those few Bermudians.

WOW, this does not reflect well on IB at all: My concern lay specifically with what could be termed “double dipping”, whereby CEO’s and other chief officers, who already obtain work permit waivers under existing policy, and did prior to this administration, would not be allocated a BEV by their employer -r ather they would end up being allocated to mid-level employees, which could thereby have the unintended consequence of effecting Bermudian opportunities – notwithstanding the comprehensive guidelines and the in-depth accreditation process.
