He possibly had something on him – that was going to give him serious “jail time” if caught!! Maybe even a gun and ammunition – which are no doubt at the bottom of the water by now!!

That water is “cold”… But he didn’t care – as he had to escape detection at any cost!!

Most sensible people will know that jumping in the water at night after a feeling suspect is a decision that could result in death or injury. Even the Police would not dive into the harbor without proper support such as life jackets or a small boat.

The airport is not a prison; it is designed for the efficient and free movement of passengers from the aircraft to the street. It could be fortified with armed guards, razor wire and controlled gates, but who would want that?

First things first for all you speculating people out there he escaped bermuda customs not the police they were just called to help with the search. Secondly by the time he had ran outside and jumped overboard by the number 3 fire point the customs officials were no were close to even see him go in the water. suggesting that bermuda police line the shore is also irresponsible because u would then have to determine the direction in which he was swimming and that was unknown until after he made good his escape. i was there i saw everything happen it was hilarious i think this young man deserves a medal for making bermuda customs look stupid. this particular crew is infamous for their treatment of passengers and um glad they got embarrassed.

The Key words is — did he have somthing illegal and did it get to its asigned destination by his brave but stupid evasive actions.
I’m inclined to believe that quite a few people would use any technique to get illegal items into Bermuda.
If he made it to the water then to dry land then I think he had somthing very serious.—- Crazy story but I’m not
stuned by it — it appears anything goes today.

Most comments on here are almost ridiculous. In what customs job description is going to state you’re required to chase a suspect, 1/4 mile run, then jump into the water and swim another 1/4 maybe 1/3 mile across a large body of water @ 10:30 pm(basically pitch black) hoping to apprehend a suspect?? People can we be real? The customs are not at fault per say. Now on the other hand maybe thw infrastructure and handling of such situations maybe lacking. Police boats are in town and the response time or prediction of where he would show up on land would be unrealistic to catch him. How many of you would have jumped into the sea and possibly risk running into difficulty to chase down someone that took this risk? Please be real with ypurseld and the rest of us. Thank you. This mattee is lwft to the DPP to find the right charges to lay and the legislation to support the charges. But I would hate for any pf you/ jury of “my peers” to sit my case anytime. So judgemental even with the absolute lack of evidence! But hey its people serving life sentences for less evidence, so what can I say?!!Bermudian a small island with an even smaller mindset!! A shame. Ships taking on water with no bail!!

It happened at night and the response time for any vessel or the amount of resources it would have required to scour the shorelines trying to predict where he would swim is highly unlikely. This a case where he was lucky enough to get away.

If he had injested the package he got away scot clean but it still amazes how he still escaped capture by swimming away. How diligent were the officers in trying to apprehend this guy? Even without a light you vision is pretty good and likely up to a couple of hundred yards on a good night.
