I shoulnd’t read their release and then feel concerned that my girlfriend and I might go for an evening walk with the dog and risk stepping on one and blowing my leg off.

My take is that they were trying to downplay its significance, and in turn the risk to the greater public, and by saying they “came upon it” and detonated it “in an abundance of caution” makes it all seem a bit more routine/boring, without getting into the detail.

Of course they could have explained that you are adventurous dog walkers and went off the beaten path, or that the recent storm could have exposed it, that very few artillery shells have been found in the last x years, that it likely a dud, all to get to the same point – the public isn’t at great risk.

I take your point… Ultimately, a simple difference of opinion. We pay the police to do a job – they did it.

@Bermy, thank you for the clarification. When I read the statement, my first question was how on earth did the police just happen to come upon it.
That police spokesperson needs to rewrite their statement.

The police didn’t stumble upon it, me and my girlfriend happened to be walking the dog and found it! We then called the police, walked them thru the brush and down the rocks to it, and then showed them where it was. I am glad they came and took care of it so it wouldn’t harm anyone but don’t take the credit for finding it like you just happened to be out patrolling and looking for things to do, jeesh. At least give the credit to me a local resident living in the neighbourhood!
