As an addendum to the post above, on weekends and the very occasional weekday I do get to drive the car I own. When I am on the road I move my car to the left side of the road to give the bikes room AND I leave a bike’s length gap between my car and the car ahead. I do the latter in case a bike needs to “nip in”. I don’t care how many bikes over take me at all. I do this so that I avoid seeing someone get hurt and also to prevent my car getting dinged. I am sympathetic to the people on bikes and I will never purposely hurt or threaten to hurt anyone.

To be clear, I was sitting on my bike NOT 3rd laning at the stretch by the Paget light near the post office heading in to town. A bunch of bikes were driving past the stopped traffic to get to the lights. While some did go “over the line” many had their wheels on the correct side. A woman came along driving out of town and leaned on her horn and narrowed the gap so that no bikes could possibly get through. She was threatening to hit people she felt were doing “wrong”.

I don’t understand car drivers who get annoyed at these people. Why? Because the bikes are getting “past you”? They get past me all the time, I don’t care at all. But some of these car drivers are willing to risk seriously injuring or killing someone….because they feel self righteous and are adopting their own vigilante justice.

It’s wrong, its dangerous and extremely stupid and ignorant.

I see the craziness committed by many people each and every day. Aiming your car at someone is being part of the problem, not the solution.

Do you REALLY want to kill someone because you feel they should not 3rd lane? Do you want someone to never walk again because you had a moment of self righteous road rage?

To those who are adamant that 3rd laning is the main problem on Bermuda’s roads, I would suggest that they don’t ride bikes and probably never have. If those bikes you hate seeing get past you did not third lane our traffic problems would be ALOT worse at rush hour. A lot worse. You would be stuck in your nice warm comfortable car listening to music etc. for a lot longer.

I don’t blame that lady they think they own both lanes if our on our side of the road u should have nothing to worry about… u r defending bikes on her side going the opposite direction please explain more… because she is not the problem 3rd n 4th laying is the problem

There was at least one fatality due to third laning.

Personally I am sick of these idiots. They put themselves and others at risk by their stupidity. You’d think the recent events would make them think, but they seem incapable.

Has the situation already gone beyond the three Cs. I certainly don’t have a better suggestion at this time but I think we have to really think hard about how to ‘inspire’ persons to seriously consider the consequences of taking risks on the roads.

ps. instead of people taking photos of Road Accident Victims and distributing them, how about being a part of the solution and take photos of license plates of vehicles that are causing issues on the roads with speed, illegal inside passing, third laning, double parking for conversations, passing on double lines,running stop lights, not stopping at stop signs etc…but oh no, nobody wants to be a snitch…they just want to wring their hands in despair.

To the woman in the car who blared her horn at motorcycles who were 3rd laning to get to the Paget stoplights and who essentially aimed her car at them….what on earth do you think you are doing? People have been using the 3rd lane in Bermuda since bikes have been on the road. I challenge you to show me one fatality as a result of 3rd laning! What you do is make the situation EXTREMELY dangerous and you are aiming a heavy vehicle full of flammable fluid at someone who cannot possibly harm you. You seem to think you are doing your civic duty by almost hitting them. I’d love to pull you out of your car on a rainy day, sit you behind one of the cars that should have failed the emission test at TCD, but didn’t because nobody does, and watch you eventually creep out to overtake cars who are at a standstill. Then someone should aim their car at you to show you what it is like.

You want Mr. Dunkley and Mr. Crockwell chasing down people, ticketing them et al.
They have enough on their black top to deal with.

As for the Commissioner ….he already knows what needs to be done. Been the same for 50 years+.

Then again. The age groups mentioned don’t mean crap. These are men that know what drugs and booze does.

Can’t teach an old dog new tricks if all they want to do is take chances and hope for the best.

despite the rash of fatalities – i am still witnessing idiocy, rampant and flagrant disregard for Life and the rules of the road.
