I have taken my licks like many these last few years and now there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Now if only I could get the investment I need to kick on, failing that it is going to be a long slow process of getting back on our feet.

I agree the numbers are hardly cause for wild celebration but they are estimates and probably very conservative at that. Maybe the Govts 2000 jobs promise has caused the Govt to be more pragmatic and a little less boastful.

Either way 50% would be a better start than 0% which is what it will be if these projects don’t start. Besides with better job training initiatives which must happen and the realization that a job is indeed precious today that number & the service that used to be there will get back to previous levels or higher. We have to start somewhere.

I agree it would be great to get more Bermudians back to work especially on current hotel properties let alone any new Hotel development.

However if investors wish to tie employment percentages to their investment then that is a situation probably brought about by past experiences. Sadly it is probably going to be the new normal and we may have to accept that or see little to no new development.

Not waving any political flags, hadn’t blamed the PLP with that nor is it a train of thought, it is just the new reality we find ourselves in. Cheers.

Not directed at you necessarily “redman” just at that train of thought.

I have no issue with the high end as in my experience, any Bermudian who excels in this sector quickly works their way up and is provided with a golden ticket of training and opportunity, anyone who tells you otherwise is either not a bermudian who excels, thinks experience (time) without value (work ethic) means something or has not worked in tourism.

The issue is the low end workers who based on the economic model for hotels in Bermuda need to live on the property so they can be compensated for low wages with food and board, often shared living accommodation. These workers are then always on hand for additional shifts, sick leave replacement etc. while bermudians will be less likely to be called in.

Personally I would like to see an opportunity for single bermudians to live on the property like a guest worker, this way they could start at the bottom (as per the traditional educational level of this group of workers) and work their way up based on their merit. I had the fortune to work in the hotel industry for several years and came across many young Bermudians who may not have the resume but have the attitude, communication skills to excel in the industry, unfortunately there was no future for them economically. If a single bermudian was allowed to live on property (existing worker housing), eat in the staff room etc. (keep their living costs to a minimum as they are establishing a career) they would thrive, be the first to be called for bonus shifts etc. When they attain a level of seniority, whether it be in the mechanical section, front desk, housekeeping, marketing etc. they can then transition off the resort.

There are near 4,000 unemployed persons…

So how many of the 4000 are qualified to work in this Hotel? Do tell us.
Further to that how many of those 4000 are you about to employ with your Hotel or other employment?

This is not the 50′s 60′s or 70′s, investors are not knocking down our doors to do business here or have you missed that?. If we want hotel development we will have to accept some harsh reality’s and a guaranteed job because you are an unemployed Bermudian is not one.

If you get investors on board with a Hotel then you can dictate the terms of employment numbers but I rather think you wouldn’t risk your money building one.

So according to some people trend of thought on 1% of them are qualified to work in this hotel.

So the other 99% are not qualified?

Which do you prefer? One creates jobs and has a positive economic impact while the other, well it does nothing at all.

Do we currently have 50-80 highly experienced, service school trained Bermudian hotel staff who are looking for jobs? If so then they obviously will get the jobs as they are qualified. They may not get 30 sick days and double time overtime when they please though!

These numbers are guess work at best and the proof will be in the pudding. In case you haven’t noticed Hotel investors have been burned so often that most are unwilling to risk their hard earned money unless they have some control, that’s just the way it is. Of course we can tell them to shove off as we don’t need their Hotel anyway!!

How about you and Mr. Famous build a Hotel and staff it with all or majority Bermudians. Do you own and run a business & If not then why not? If yes then tell us what is its operation and how are you doing hiring Bermudians?. I’m sure many would like to know your successful strategy.

Before the hotel is completed the OBA is already stating that half the jobs are going to expats.

As such the Morgan’s Point team does not determine who the contractor hires as that is solely down to the firm that is selected.

Never has the developer had the right to determine who the chosen contractor hires and this development is no different.

Well at least he backtracked on last week’s lie that the Pink Beach Act was amended by the Government to permit the hiring of foreigners without having to go through the usual work permit process.

The above is simple politricks by the usual suspects once again.

PS: Welfare is when the Government pays out monies to someone (i.e. social assistance) or when the Government forgives an outstanding debt because the individual/institution cannot afford to pay it (i.e. BIU’s bond forgiveness).

This latest effort from Mr Famous is quite simply making something out of nothing.
