I feel sorry for Hinsons’s yes but the Pink Ferry is also Harbour Road’s bus. There is no bus for Harbour Road. The ferry is therefore essential in that respect and it will be many more than just the seventy Hinson’s residents who are inconvenienced.

We need the pink ferry!!!

Wonder if the Newstead boat could take over? With a Government subsidiary of course. They have a better boat for the job. It is faster, more economical to run & needs less crew.

Had to delete most of my responses to your idiocy as they would not get past the censors.

Living on Hinsons is challenging, it pays off with peace and quite and a slow pace of life but it is tough. But then to have morons like yourself post such an uneducated response to simple concern makes my blood boil. Buy a punt? this post must be from someone with zero understanding of the marine environment, zero education about our water ways etc. A few questions for you:

List the locations a boat can dock for extended periods of time in Hamilton?
How does a senior manage to get into a punt in any conditions and motor across the Harbour?
How does a child get to Hamilton to catch the bus to school, should they take their punt across as well?
What population has been the number one most consistent user of the pink ferry route since its inception?

BTW – in cases of a medical emergency, the Hinsons island community lends a hand, they talk to each other and rely on each other during hurricanes and storms, they assist each other when possible but a regular ferry is essential and if the service was to disappear there would be several families forced to sell their family home, now for a massive loss as the convenience of a ferry no longer exists.

You strike me as the guy who rides past an accident thinking, “well they had that coming”. SMFH.

What are the poor residents of Hinsons Island to do? Here’s a suggestion, buy a punt. Should they have a medical emergency, do they run to the wharf and wait on the Pink Route ferry to come along and pout about tax paying when it doesn’t show up? …doubtful.

I agree the ferry service here (like most of the government services) is not always based on need, but rather convenience and pleasure. Unfortunately, in Bermuda it’s the convenience and pleasure of the operators that determines the service.

If it’s privatized it can be setup for the convenience and pleasure of the customers. A much better solution.

What no one above has addressed is whether the “pink” route covers Hinsons Island. If it does where does this leave the residents there – they pay their taxes just like everyone else but will not have any access to public transport!!! That is a real problem for them if they don’t have their own boat to commute with.

The buses and ferries have become almost as embarrassing as the taxi service. In addition, we don’t rent cars. How will tourists get around or do we not care???

Yet again Bermuda is not competing – and we wonder why tourism is in the toilet. Bermuda and Bermudians need to get with the program – or become a 3rd world country riddled with poverty.

I don’t think having it run (and promoted by) the Tourism Authority would be feasible, frankly. Mainly locals commute on this route, but it’s likely hemorrhaging money galore, between salaries and maintenance.

The Hong Kong Metro is privately run (you can buy the shares on the Hong Kong exchange). They are widely considered the most efficiently run metro system in the world, with a 2013 on-time performance of 99.9%. It’s fast, inexpensive, safe and reliable.

The same company also runs train and metro systems, profitably, in other counties, including Sweden and England.
