With the exception of the few, here we are as a community mourning the passing of a man who was involved in a very serious accident and I am reading all of these comments that certainly does nothing to offer the affected family comfort.

I express my most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the Hewey family. I am so saddened to hear about a friend who I have known all of his life.

I’m just tired of commenting on the general standard of “driving” in BDA in general!! It is really atrocious!! And The BPS are to blame as well – because they are NOT doing their jobs properly!!

And then the court system is a joke!! God knows what all the IB sector people and tourists in general have to say to their friends and families – after they leave the Island!!

I was there at the scene it was my brother who was in the collision with the ambulance he is 16 and we all know 16 year old boys make dumb decicions. Let’s just thank god both people are fine. But however he does have leg injuries n bad road rash sorry my spelling is horrible but Im 13 and I am working on it please keep the comments positive.

Are you serious? I’ve seen the way people act with emergency vehicles. Barely anybody stops anymore! People going in the opposite direction assume they dont need to. Some people who do bother to stop do so on the heat of the corner or in impossible possitions. How about we as drivers need to be a little more courteous???

And if you ever find yourself in an ambulance rushing to the hospital with a loved one on the stretcher I can guarantee you would be more mad the general public and not the ambulance driver.

I’m a big fan of police using cameras and issuing tickets for driving with a lack of due care and attention. Mount a dash cam to a police bike and start issuing tickets supported by video evidence:
Tailgating (with inches to spare – the roads are not a race track)
Overtaking on blind corners. (And overtaking somebody who is already overtaking)
Riding on the sidewalk to overtake traffic
Running the red lights in Paget
Third laning

All instances of poor driving I witnessed this morning.

The worst thing is all the pedal cyclists out excercising. They should be banned from the road as they get in everyone’s way. Someone should invent a cyclist computer game so they can ride on their ipads – it would be much less effort. Who needs excercise anyway?

Tony C, there is no doubt that the standard of riding and driving in Bermuda is terrible, but your criticism of the police in your example is unwarranted. You must ask if the end justifies the means. For a police car that is heading in the opposite direction to a bike that is already overtaking everyone, be able to safely catch the rider is very difficult. And you must understand that overtaking in itself is not illegal. I’m sure in your opinion, the rider was speeding but police must weigh up the risk that they will pose (in a car) to the public by speeding after a bike rider. And perhaps, they were on their way to a job? To all my former colleagues, stay safe and keep up the good work!

Interesting. This morning the full force of idiotic driving was on display, and then I open Bernews and see this.

What makes riders think that racing past another rider or car with 2 inches to spare is a good idea? I often find myself willing these idiots to get hit, if for no other reason than to get them off the roads. Just yesterday a bike went racing past me towards the lights at Paget, wrong side of the road, you know the scene. A police car was in traffic coming the other way, and did nothing. I was expecting an instant siren and flashing lights, but no response at all.

If people know they will get away with it, they will carry on as normal.

The results of that can be seen all too often.

I wish a speedy recovery to those injured this morning due to the actions of others.
