This standard makes no sense to me. The benefits should go to those that do the work and provide the services.

The 90% standard smells of entitlement, something that many Bermudians are guilty of. I was born here so give me something for nothing.

Sure the government should try to widen the net but creating economic benefits for one group is better than not doing it at all!! At another point in time a different group will benefit disproportionately.

To the extent that government revenues increase then some of our hideous, unconscionable debt can be paid down. This benefits all Bermudians.

How do people feel excluded, the AC have been doing everything that people can expect from them to feel included. It isn’t the AC that is making people feel excluded, it is the people say that we will be excluded. This is not a hand out and I commend and congratulate the efforts of the AC organizations thus far, they have been providing opportunities and there will be plenty more to come. Nobody should allow themselves to get hung up on and held back by those who are the opinion that this should be a giving event. We will not all see a direct benefit, but that isn’t to say there will be no benefits indirectly, one only needs to look.
You say perception is a person’s reality, but perception is within a person’s control, and that perception can easily be shifted from one of exclusion to inclusion, they just need to open their eyes to what is available to them and find their opportunity. In fact, that is the only way it is going to happen, so people have a choice, they can be included, or they can be excluded, but it will only be by their choice.

Some countries have hosted the world’s great sporting affairs; World football Cup; the Olympic games and so on and just as many have not realize lasting economic benefits. There were many white Elephants that were left in it’s wake. If the OBA does not realize this great economic benefit for BermudA in the much touted America’s cup; it most certainly will pay a political price. Which means it will probably hope for and count on some type of glow in the wake of the America’s cup whereupon it will quickly call an election.

While I don’t agree with Regina, I also find your own statement to be nothing more than a complete load of $#!t. There isn’t a single grain of truth to what you have said. Firstly, we have not forked out $77m, that is the estimated cost for the complete event from now to 2017, and they will be soliciting as much of that money from sponsors as possible. Secondly, there has been more than enough information sessions, and more expected to come, explaining where there can be opportunities for anybody interested in working for the opportunity. While this event is expect to cost around $77m, Bermuda as a whole stands to gain over $250m, it is an investment that will benefit all in some way, but hand outs will be at the back of the line.
This event has the potential to improve our island for all, that is all who would work for it, because the only way Bermuda will benefit from this is if we work for it. Nothing has ever worked in history, without people working for it.

As an Australian living working here you people got no idea how much money was generated in Perth for that the whole Country. Hundreds and Hundreds of millions of dollar. The city of sails Auckland made a killing everyone prospered not just the tradesmen everyone. Its the people that follow the Americas Cup the tourists the families. For every team there are followers. This is beyond good for Bermuda. I no its a small Island but don’t think small like the bloke above me. Pretty certain that if a survey was done asking, does IB benefit a select few or all the whole of Bermuda, the results would be similar to those in this survey. Does it make what these people think true? No, it’s just their perception. The fact that IB is the biggest source of revenue that supports the whole of Bermuda, in some way or another, isn’t recognised by a lot of people, whether they believe it or not. Same with the AC35. The positive effects of AC35 will filter through to these people and they won’t even realise it. It will mean a busier, healthier economy and more opportunities for Bermuda and Bermudians as whole.

There is really no way to ‘widen the net’, as you put it, and there is a simple reason for this. Not everyone works in a trade that will need to be directly involved. It is one of the principles of trickle down.. or even out, economics. This event is not being put on as a hand out. the field that will receive direct touch from this is also not that narrow. We can start with the construction workers building the infrastructure, from there we move out to the utilities and services, even restaurant and bars for team events. These will have the first touch from the actual team operations. Next we have the increase in personnel and families of the teams moving here, renting from landlords, again using utilities and services (like power, cable, cell), buying vehicles, paying for gas, buying groceries, going out to bars and restaurants. Then during the events you will have an increase in visitors, paying into our hotels, bars, restaurants, taxis, public transport, bike rental and gas. Also during the event you will have local vendors/entrepreneurs with stalls at the event villages.
This poll is less a reflection of the potential reality we face, and more to do with not fully understanding general economic principles of free market society. Employers across a number of industries/businesses will see direct payments from this, much of that money will then go to 1) employees who will then spend that money to other services/business; 2) business expenses to other employers/businesses, who then pay employees and expenses and so on and so on. Bermudians virtually island wide stand to gain in some fashion from this event, except those who intend to stand around looking for the hand out.

I get what you’re saying Jeremy. That while this is good for Bermuda not everyone stands to benefit equally. Ironically, it’s the people who don’t work in trades and own property who stand to benefit the least. At least the people in trade will see an uptick in their earnings. If we forget about how we got here today, we may be doomed to repeat that mistake. However, let’s disregard it for the moment.

If someone wants to directly benefit from the AC, then they need to get off their duffs and work for it.

There are a number of people already doing this. People coming up with ideas to attract the attention of those who will come to see the racing. People volunteering. Our hospitality people learning about the history, etc, so they can talk to the tourists about it to help build interest.

Pitch in, or stop complaining. And if you don’t have any idea how to pitch in. Start by learning how to volunteer. Talk to other people you know about ideas. Show initiative. Ask questions.

It won’t be immediate, but something will come up.

Its going to be SO satisfying after this event is over and the proof is in the numbers that this event only benefitted a few and mostly those “at the top”. The whole frigging event is a playground event for the wealthy in the first place. The man who won the last America’s Cup is worth $53 BILLION!! Of course its not reasonating with Bermudians. I suppose though that the peanut gallery currently leaving comments about a certain segment of the community using code words like “lazy” will be making up excuses, deflecting and will somehow, as usual-blame the PLP. Or maybe they will be too busy creating stupid memes about “Catherine Jenner”. They will come here and sail their little toys around the island then leave back to their elitist lives. I can’t wait for all the third world country power outages too. Belco can’t even handle the load now and with all the rich folk pouring in with their ACs blasting in June it should make for a great party for all! Lets celebrate!

How much insinuation does a poll need before it is considered propaganda? ‘Select few’ what kind of demographic profile is that?

So your telling me that increased air arrivals, hotel room bookings, home/apartment rentals, public/private transportation, restaurants/bars, retail and small/large contractors constitute as a select few?

SanFran had 300,000,000 of economic activity during the AC. We are the size of a suburb in SF and you think that the knock on economic effect will not benefit the average Bermudian??

People need to go back to school and learn how an economy works.
