congrats to the students who received the scholarships! Some of the comments I have read are not very encouraging a lot of families do try hard to send their love ones off to school let’s be realistic here I would like to know who really has the money to pay for these schools its nice to know there is help out there every Warwick acedemy and Saltus and BHS students are offered scholarships every year majority of the private schools and public schools are offered scholarships so what’s wrong with this scholarshjp plan for these Bermudians to also have to apply for n yes we tax payers are paying for every one of the scholarship funds but its to help out the Bermudians who we need most to have working in the island and its nice to see the children are taking advantage of it now So Like I Said CONGRATS to the kids who are trying to make something of them selves.

Yes the missing 800 million tax payers money could have sent every body who was academically capable to college ,we could have fixed all the old folks homes fixed roads bridges built low cost housing upgraded all schools built a new airport I could go on ,nah I’ll stop here

Oh Alvin get a grip we are a large town of 60,000. Get some perspective love. Look at the subjects these great people,listed and photographed above are studying and imagine the size of a university which would cover everything from Catering to Medicine and business. It would have to be the most expensive university in the world!

That is a GREAT idea!! Yes, we should institute this. Thank you for your suggestion. May I also suggest that we require a demonstrated ability to house, feed and cloth their own off-spring as well?

I look forward to the day Bermuda creates it’s own university; it’s long been a given that Bermudians should sent their children overseas for higher education; but the truth is many can not effort it and thereby Bermuda loses it’s human potential and waste of what we as a country can do on our own. On first seeing the heading of this article I thought now there is a positive story from start to finish – bright young Bermudians being generously provided with scholarships to pursue their dreams. But no, we have to have someone who can see the dark side of every issue – even this one.

At the risk of offending Onion Juice I would like to add my sincere congratulations to these 11 recipients who I hope will be able to make the most of their opportunities, and to sincerely thank the Green family for having both the foresight and generosity to support their fellow Bermudians, and not just these but the 140 or more they have already assisted.

Don’t know about anyone else but I find that onion juice is enough to make you cry!

Not sure why we have to endure the above negative, bitter comments though, perhaps the poster should focus on making his/herself perfect and his/her family perfect before throwing stones

Wow. Maybe you’ll introduce eugenics next. IN any case, children haven’t asked to be born to the circumstances they are in. What happens when a family has had something catastrophic happen with regard to its financial situation? What if the family simply will not support the child in their pursuits- is that the fault of the child? This isn’t about giving the parents a cushy ride, this is about helping a young person achieve their dreams. What if the parents are sufficiently disadvantaged that, even with as much savings as they could manage, it barely made a dent in tuition- does that mean that someone with promise can’t go to college because they were born into less than optimal circumstances? Are you then asserting that, unless you can demonstrate that you can afford to send your kid to college, that you shouldn’t have one in the first place??? This is precisely how the poor stay poor, and the affluent grow accustomed to being even more entitled. Bravo, Greens. And thank you. Not all of us came from families who could afford college, people like you help make it possible.

The government or taxpayers are not responsible for educating and preparing your children for adulthood…YOU ARE!!! Not everyone can or even will get a scholarship but your child deserves a higher education anyway. It’s a shame when a child can’t go to college unless someone else pays for it. Start preparing for it when they are born, or maybe even before you have them ask yourself if you can afford to provide for all of their needs which includes an education. Yes, I said it!
