Competition drives the price wars.

Virtually everything these days can be had at a discount except a vacation in Bermuda.

My friends will not come here, they are saying Bermuda is too expensive, because we don't know how to manage our assets and money.

Half a cake is better that no cake.

The BTA arrival stats are collect from visitor cards when they arrive via airplane. They draw the arrival location of the visitors from their zipcodes on the arrival cards. So anyone with a New York City zipcode would be counted into these metrics. So yes, these arrival numbers are New Yorkers only.

Bermuda actually got a plug on last night's showing of The Blacklist. Unfortunately when the corrupt cop told Reddington he wanted to take his wife to Bermuda the response from Reddington was, he'd been to Bermuda, saw the pink houses and white roofs and rode a scooter but otherwise there was nothing else to do but play checkers. Not that Bermuda needs any Reddingtons running around shooting the place up but certainly
something we need to make sure doesn't happen considering the recent crimes starting to pop up.

I believe, in part, one of the reasons we have seen an uptick in younger visitors might well be because of all the terrorism incidents in Europe and elsewhere. If Bermuda loses it's reputation as being a safe and secure vacation location we will be in big trouble.

It's not just the targeted advertising it's the sale that was the hook. This just proves that we outprice ourselves out of the market. None of the governments past or present have put a long term strategy fourth for this target. Having just luxury hotels and targeting just the wealthy wont cut it. The wealthy have the means to go as far as they want on this planet and don't need to settle for a short hop to get to get to sun and beaches.

Assuming that this turnaround continues, I hope that we all can have a serious and reasoned debate about other areas where government departments have consistently failed to deliver acceptable results. It's ok to admit that government, no matter who is in charge, just isn't that good at certain things.

This is a great example where there was clearly a need for change and the decision was made to not just tweak the system or replace a few people here and there, for fear of rocking the proverbial boat, but to make a real fundamental change to the command and control structure around how we market ourselves as a Tourism destination.

Some areas need a consistent long-term plan that extends beyond the five year election cycle, or the constant shuffling of Cabinet seats. In my view Tourism isn't the only area where this applies.

When we targetted advertising to only one segment of the US population for years, the other segments felt they weren't welcome. It wasn't a platinum period. It was a disaster. Unintended consequences are consequences nonetheless.
