The only way Skyport could be a considered a “Bermudian company” is if it is owned 80% by Bermudians.

Perhaps they misspoke and they need to clarify to the public that the Skyport is a “company incorporated in Bermuda” wholly-owned by Aecon Concessions.

At this point we need clarification.

You are incorrect in all statements. Below is copied directly from the Bermuda Companies Act.

PART IX
LOCAL COMPANIES

(1) In this Part and in the Third Schedule the following shall be deemed to be
“Bermudian”—

(c) a local company in which the percentage of shares beneficially owned by
Bermudians is not less than 80% of the total issued share capital of that
company

“There are literally thousands of them and they are the foundation upon which our economy exists.” This statement is also incorrect. These companies only assist our economy when their profits stay in Bermuda. The majority of these companies raise our GDP which is a false measurement of a successful economy. Few of them increase our GNP and PPP which is a true measure of a successful economy. Having wealth in a countries bank does not mean the country is wealthy. In this case money made in Bermuda by Aecon Concessions will flow back into Canada’s economy. The only part we benefit from is Bermudians employed in the company spending in Bermuda which is very little and not guaranteed.

It’s been a long while since I looked at the Companies Act, but my recollection is that only a company that is at least 80% Bermudian-owned is considered “Bermudian” for those purposes.

The fact that the company is wholly owned by Aecon does not mean that it is not a Bermudian company. If the company is incorporated in Bermuda, it is a Bermudian company regardless of the location of its shareholders…

Every project associated with the Government is viewed through race and a PLP / OBA bias. It is so tiring. Here’s a well kept secret: people on both sides want good things for Bermuda. Also, supporters of both will be harmed if we do not get the economic growth we need. I hope the airport is successful – for Bermuda’s sake.

A Bermudian company is simply one registered in Bermuda – there is no requirement that they be owned or operated by Bermudians. There are literally thousands of them and they are the foundation upon which our economy exists.
