Just met a couple visiting from the US East Coast and their exact words were that they believe Bermuda is doing a much better job of advertising itself recently.

This is their first ever visit to Bermuda and they said they and people they know have always flown straight past Bermuda and headed to the Caribbean as until now Bermuda hasn’t even been on their radar. They were amazed with how quick and easy it is to get here and that the colour of the water is easily just as spectacular if not better than anything farther south. It really sounded as if they wished they heard about Bermuda sooner and, although it was early in their trip, hopefully they’ll be back.

In terms of advertising, it really seems that the BTA has done an fantastic job the past few years (certainly far better value for money than Global Hue and trips to India to drum up tourism in any case!).

ps – Congratulations to Mr. Dallas thus far. The hard work begins now. Apart from keeping up the air arrivals as more and more rooms come online (especially the Air BNB stuff, huge potential to tap Gen Xers and Millenials, a thorough review of the Cruise industry needs to be done with a view to getting more revenue spent on shore and spread around the island.

As recently as yesterday somebody asked me (I’m presently in NY on business), how long have I lived in the Bahamas… This happens all the time whenI travel, and I travel at least twice a month. Once in a while they will say Barbados. Quite a few years ago, Bahamas started a campaign “It’s better in the Bahamas.” I think this was not only to differentiate themselves but to grab as much of other folks pie, especially ours, as they could. I think they succeeded spectacularly. I’ve mentioned this to numerous Government Ministers and Premiers through the years, but they all seem more interested in spending millions on “experts.” This is something so incredibly simple to address – e.g There is Only One Bermuda, Unspoilt, Unhurried, Uncommon… (Those uns were a late 70s campaign for us that was incredibly successful) but then whoever wants to listen to the front end providers, the guys who actually give the service and present the product…
