That chase lasted about two minutes, the rider and/or police vehicle could have crashed at any point into another motorist and an innocent life lost. It is difficult to know when to halt a pursuit, depending on various scenarios, at times the police will halt, i.e. the rider seldom reached a speed over 60 k and more likely looked several times as though he was about to stop for the police. I do hope a very serious penalty is given, including compulsory driver education classes and community service. Usually community service is given for minor criminal offences. The police will halt a chase if the chase is becoming dangerous to the motoring public.

Wonder how serious the infraction was that the rider would flee and that the officers were hellbent to chase and escalate to a dangerous situation. Better police use discretion and follow up later as having several high speed vehicles in traffic just multiplies the danger.

The police should not chase a person when this happens get the plate number and go find his ass. The police put more people at risk by chasing these idiots then they reliaze. Not saying the rider should not face full charges but it’s was the cop that almost me made me crash because he couldn’t ride and the person pulling chase was long gone!! That’s all

Uh, all you ‘ban for life’ advocates, what should a person convicted for DUI receive as punishment? Is a $800 fine and a year off the road enough? Simply ‘third laning’ is considered to be driving without due care and is $800 and 10 points, so do you demand drunk drivers be banned for life too? We probably don’t have chases every day but drunks are out 24/7 365 days a year.

I don’t know the percentage since relevant statistics are probably not taken and certainly aren’t made public, but these little ‘learner bikes’ bikes do evade the police despite the cops riding 10x more powerful machines and the fact that they have radios.

No idiot, the bike or police car could hit pedestrians or plough into a family driving their car, people could be seriously injured or die. Someone needs to be the adult and weigh the risks, police can trace plates and have an extensive, and expensive, system of cameras at their disposal to identify and track people. Many times police don’t even catch these guys so it definitely is not worth it. Let’s see how many drunks are arrested for DUI out of the thousands who will be driving over the holidays, they are just as bad as this guy or worse.

How dumb do you have to be to try to outrun the cops on an ISLAND 20 sq miles? Ever seen anyone outrun a radio signal? Is there a charge for endangerment to other road users?

Wonder how serious the infraction was that the rider would flee and that the officers were hellbent to chase and escalate to a dangerous situation. There have been several local deaths over the years when persons were pursued so as you say, better the police use discretion and follow up later.

Par for the course with these dudes , their bad riding causes you to swerve into a ditch.Half a mile down the road he’s sitting on the sidewalk holding is arm and the bikes all over the road.You stop to see if he’s alright (same cat) I bet he tells you to mind ya effin business.

Sometimes it is better not to chase someone who has no regard for others on the road and is willing to cause a fatality or commit suicide, in order to evade the police over a minor traffic infraction, not worth the risk.

“Apologise for any angst”?! That’s a little casual given the road casualty rates here. This criminal endangered lives. He and all he passed are lucky to be alive. Do hope he has a good Xmas thinking this over in the slow lane of a holding cell until the rest of us are safe and sound after Xmas.
