Almost makes you not want to be thier friend… I always refuse the bag, knapkins and cutlery at Buzz. I have my own cutlery at the office and take my own reusable bag to get the food. It’s really about just giving things a little more thought and realizing that cutting out single use plastic really isn’t that hard. It takes a little time but then it just becomes second nature.

Are you in California? If not, why are you so concerned with their laws? At least the “lunatic liberals” care about the biggest problem in the world! The destruction of it. The “crazy conservatives” still think climate change is a hoax!

I have a very difficult time stopping staff in pubs from giving me a plastic straw…. After several months of asking not to get a straw (not exaggerating) finally got two drinks without… Major achievement. I have to give kudos though to Swizzle Inn because they have been promoting this since last year

If there was no intention to prosecute waiters who might provide a plastic straw to someone, why put that in the law? Ian Calderon, the Democratic assemblyman who has proposed this can say that the intention isn’t to prosecute waiters but that could/would be the effect.

That proposed law in California was just to raise awareness and it hasn’t passed yet. The person who proposed it stated it was to highlight the problem and it was not the intention to prosecute waiters.

A friend of mine owns a restaurant in Hamilton. He tried no putting straws in drinks automatically and people complained!!
Another time, I was in Buzz getting a sandwich. Another friend was also getting a sandwich. I quickly said no bag for mine. The girl at the counter started putting my friend’s sandwich is one of those ubiquitous yellow bags and I told my friend he didn’t need a bag as it was only one item. He said “yes I do” and took the bag.
The first thing that’s got to change is the mentality about convenience plastics.

Great article Bernews! Hopefully even more businesses will join our plastic free weekend this year (June 1-3)! Also check out Harvest Straws and Loliware for a few other cool alternatives to plastic for situations where a stainless, or other reusable straw is impractical.

To learn more about this successful campaign, research ‘Strawless in Seattle.’ If Seattle, Washington, with a population of nearly 4,000,000 can do it, surely, we can?”

Did you also know that the lunatic liberals in California have made it illegal for waiters to offer customers a plastic straw? The Californian Democrats want to prosecute waiters who offer customers a plastic straw and ignore people in their state illegally. Makes total sense.

Say no to cigarettes should be first if we are to single one item out, they found almost ten times more butts than straws, next is glass bottles, I bet beers make up the majority found. Not using straws is good but people need to stop throwing non-biodegradable items especially, in the sea.

I had exactly the same experience on my holiday in Bermuda last year. Everywhere I went for a soft drink a straw automatically appear in my glass by which it was too last to say no.It would be great if bars and restaurants used paper straws if they have to but really, no one over the age of about 5 needs a straw. Incidentally, my husband and I took part in the beach clean up which opened our eyes to amount of rubbish in the sea.

You can start by naming and shaming the biggest culprits of distribution of polluting plastic bags i.e. all of the local retail stores – Buzz, Miles, Supermart (although they offer a paper bag option), Lindos, the pharmacies etc. etc.

Great reminder of our need to ramp up our efforts to protect our planet. I went to a fab bar at one of Bermuda’s premier city hotels and they gave me a plastic straw. I advised the bartender that he should ask first before they put a straw in drinks, because some people don’t want to contribute to waste, and they could play a role in reducing waste. He told me that the company’s policy requires that every drink comes with a straw. I was disappointed, and admit I let it go, but this article has motivated me to write them and ask them to rethink that default straw-in approach.
