There are different kinds of drivers out there, those who adhere to policy and those who will not subject them selved to control .

Todays modern vehicles have improved with greater fuel saving efficient engines, reduced vehicle weight and aerodynamics even tires have contributed to greater efficiency , driving is virtualy imposible to maintain speed at 35 K ( 20 M.P.H.) unless one drives in lower gears, however, todays modern engines and efficient C.V.T. gear boxes this makes driving at slower speeds virtualy impractible.

The vehicle is not entirely to blame here,ill attention and winding roads and hills only add to the dilemma , what I am saying here, is that 99% of drivers which include some our visitors exceed the un obtainable posted speed limit.

” One size does not fit all” vehicles have become more efficient over time, as some come with torbo charging high reving smaller engines for greater efficiency.

We shall see what electric vehicles do if they ever catch on, I know that they are quick to drag off the mark, however battery power does not come for free.

Possibly ,our speed limit was set for driving and night on wet roads, pot holes and blind corners don’t help matters and also driving too slow can lead to tragety.

Solving the problem, and the solution of speed control could be done by posting realistic speed guidelines in different areas around the island including the city as they do in other countries

We are all caught up in ” catch 22 policy” by trying to mantain 35 K and that is imposible for heavy tractor trailers and Government busses, I can also add the police and emergency service vehicles to the list .

The vehicle trend or trafic flow today on Bermuda roads sets by uses the practical speed at just under 50 k but only in certain areas, a survey is required.

Bermuda drivers are some of the most compentant and proficient drivers in the world.

Norway, having similar narrow winding roads to Bermuda has their legal speed limit set at 60 K.

When an accident occurs anyone should be accounted for and have to re take there driving test, have to take driving lessons at there own expense and be taken off the road for a minimum of 6 months. The penalty for “driving without due care” should be applied according to all persons at fault and a stricter penalty should be incurred.

I hope our Government starts placing stricter penalties in court otherwise our roads will seem like being on a roller coaster.
