It is poetic justice that Ron Lightbourne should receive the Lance Hayward award, as he was a constant companion of my father for many years. My only wish is that there could be two such awards so that Clarence “Tootsie” Bean could also receive recognition of his consummate musicianship as a drummer and his contribution to Bermuda’s cultural legacy.

Hearing the background of these awards is a reminder of our history including the good, the bad and the ugly.

Bermuda should do more of this and rebuild awards like the Bermuda National Heroes Award to acknowledge annually without fail the services of present and past individuals.

We are a nation of unique and special people and honouring them serves us well.
