What gets me is when you are in the middle of a round-about and someone stops dead to let someone through!!!! Never saw this 5 years ago, i swear.

And the amount of people flying through Red lights now is crazy.

Slowing or stopping on a main thoroughfare to ‘politely’ let someone out of a side road is actually against the law . Most people , it seems , never read their copy of the road traffic handbook when they applied for their license.

Whistling Frog is absolutely right about drivers suddenly braking on main roads to let someone out. We all should have curtesy and consideration on our roads but lets also use common sense. Before you suddenly brake please look in your rearview mirror. When I grew up we were taught to put our left arm out to alert the drivers behind that we were either slowing or stopping Very few still do that. Suddenly braking on wet roads is even worse. According to experts at the University of Dallas you should check your mirrors every 5 sec.

Starting about 15 years ago the Government embarked on a programme of widening and smoothing out our roads. The Minister of Transport at the time said it was necessary to deal with traffic. Since that time, TCD has stopped caring about the appearance of cars, which means motorists have stopped caring as much about the appearance of their cars and do not take the care they used to to avoid hazards. Similarly, the widening and smoothing of our roads has caused drivers to drive faster and take more chances.

I do not say that that is the cause of this accident, but it is a problem that no one seems to want to address.

You make no sense and contradict yourself. I drive a 4.5 ton truck and have no problem getting around on these roads on a daily bases. People are too busy doing other things while driving and not paying attention.
You saying speeds should increase, you’re obviously not thinking about bigger vehicles having to slowdown in any event they may need to in the case of and emergency. What people need to stop doing, is slamming brakes on the main roads to let out one vehicle from a driveway before looking in their rear-view or side mirrors, people on bikes are doing this now and it’s very dangerous. Also people have this habit of sticking the fronts of the vehicle out into the main road purposely to get traffic to stop so they can come out, again, dangerous. All these bad driving practices need to stop.

Where I grew up we had lanes 10′ wide, with stone walls 8′ high either side, covered in bushes, grass on the centre of the road. Rarely did we get accidents. We were taught to respect the conditions and think ahead. Here, people drive with absolutely no regard for other road users. In fact, it appears to be the case that everyone has to get out of the way, “cos I’m comin thru”. I was taught the mantra “Every other road user is an idiot”. Here, that is so true.

Using cell phones while driving is commonplace, no-one indicates, running red lights is the rule, they drive bikes on sidewalks, there is zero respect for anyone else. Having a car that stops quickly at 60mph is great unless you’re on your phone and/or drunk.

Does anyone ever call people out? Do they hell. By doing that, you condone bad driving. Your kids see it, your kids do it. Your kids die because of it.

So long as these habits continue, people will continue to die. You reap what you sow. Carry on moaning about potholes all you like. The problem starts with you. When you have a loved one die, you will soon change your tune.

I was bumper to bumper tailgated this afternoon for some considerable distance.

I could not give way as there were many cars exiting the city fromthe opposite direction.

This make me wonder if drivers who think they own the road have intensions that are deliberate and spiteful.

Some of these so called accidents could be drivers malicious intensions gone wrong.

By the way there is no such thing as an accident, they are all collisions between two parties or vehicles .

glad to see no bad injuries. For one, our roads are very overgrown and narrow with walls jutting out into roads and bad potholes. all this needs to be fixed to save lives. also, the slow speed limit set for horses in 1920 has no bearing on modern life with vehicles designed to cruise at 60mph and stop in tested short distances in a matter of seconds. all the slow speed limit does is agitate drivers and cause worse driving, overtaking, bad decisions, impatience, etc. I bet if you got an intelligent expert in the island you would see 40mph on most roads as a safe limit with 50mph in quite a few. And yes, 20mph in some places too! Guarantee this will reduce accidents, despite what narrow-minded people think.
