On the second paragraph, I am not so sure that our politicians lacked education and experience to run a country. My view is that they lacked the guts to do what was needed. They caved in to wild cat strikes in the 1970s and 1980s. As you point out, they expanded the civil service to mask unemployment. In the 1990s they were just trying to hold on to power. In the 21st century, our politicians have been trying to address historic wrongs without regard to the long-term future of Bermuda.

Like life in the 21st century, politics today is about tweets and sound bites, not about long-term policy.

It’s how things are. Has NEVER stopped under any Gov anywhere.

No big deal under any Government any time.

No doom and gloom. No need to keep trying to scare the masses.

Wont help you overturn 25-11.

But that was funny tho.

Anything, and I mean anything, negative that occurred between 2013 and July 2017 was solely down to the Government at the time.

Now it ‘sounds so stupid’ to you and your fellow PLP supporters. Hypocrites of the highest order.

Just tell your PLP to change their mantra from standing strong to ‘it wasn’t me.’

And let me tell you it is a fact that the raft of PLP tax increases, introductions and fee hikes has significantly increased the cost of business in Bermuda. Don’t care if you don’t believe it, but watch this space as there are a few more downsizing and closures to occur very shortly.

Economists now agree that Burtonomics was a rash experiment in the area of pursuing a single economic strategy. While initially promising riches, it soon transpired to be such a narrow approach that it created a mere handful of jobs mainly for highly paid expatriate workers and neglected essential economic areas such as retail and construction.
Like the trickle down theory, Burtonomics is now widely discredited.

Examples of Burtonomics in practice include (yet are not limited to):

1. Increasing taxes on small-medium sized local businesses.
2. Making concessions for sketchy cryptocurrency businesses that do not create jobs in Bermuda.
3. Tacit, indirect endorsements by the Government in discrimination against foreigners and LGBTQ+ citizens whilst simultaneously welcoming their monetary investment via tourism.
4. Wanting to make businesses “squeal”, yet complain that international companies to not contribute enough.
5. Trying to enact policy to forcefully relinquish the autonomy enjoyed by the municipalities of Hamilton and St. Georges by being absorbed into quangos, led by undemocratically elected government appointees.

I wonder at what point will the current government acknowledge and admit that our economy is collapsing slowly before our very eyes and that something needs to be done about this. Newsflash: taxing small-medium sized local businesses to death in order to feed the lumbering civil service monstrosity is not the solution!

My guess is however, that the PLP will pretend that everything is peachy, scapegoat the OBA, e-commerce or some other boogeyman and just dismiss reality because the only metric that seemingly matters to them is 25-11. Sad…
