It was a real thing 20 years ago. Technology changed and many undersea cable companies went bankrupt. Bermuda had a number of those undersea cable companies, including Flag which was one of the biggest endeavors

It could have been.
The last time the PLP was in power, a company called Global Crossing tried to locate in Bermuda. They would have provided Bermuda with revenue based on a transaction tax.
The PLP welcomed this, but then stipulated that internet transactions involving pornography or gambling would not be allowed.
95% of internet transactions involve gambling and porn.
Global Crossing is now located in Ireland.

Southern Cross, one of the biggest cable companies in the world, has had their Head Offices in Bermuda for years, yet operate in the Pacific with thousands of kms of subsea cables. A map of the Atlantic would show a huge nbr of subsea cables already in place looking like spaghetti junction in places. The incorporation of new companies in Bermuda, the creation of jobs, plus building of cable stations and monitoring of the systems is a very real opportunity for Bermuda.

Hi, yes there are some real opportunites within this industry. I am past president of SubOptic the global industry association for submarine cables and former CEO of a submarine cable system for 14 years. This draft legislation opens to doors for conversations with companies building systems that go past Bermuda and also systems already in the water for relocation of their head office. We have started these conversations already in anticipation of this legislation.

Can someone who knows anything about this industry please answer – is this actually a thing? I know all about the undersea cables but is there really a bunch of companies who could or would relocate to Bermuda?
