It is just so easy to step unevenly on them and fall or twist an ankle.

They seem to forget that traffic going from east to west and reverse has no quick route to avoid town. By adding more obstructions to reduce the ability for efficient travel through the city this will increase congestion. As many of these routes are used by the police, fire and ambulances it will make quick and safe passage more difficult and increase time to reach their destinations.
