The reason why it isn’t in Bermuda, is that it is not profitable with the cost of energy. How on earth do Govt. expect it to lower the cost of food????

I applaud the initiative to improve food security in Bermuda but why not take all that money you will spend on designing and building a purpose built indoor vertical farm and use it to encourage each family to grow their own fresh vertical greens? For less than $200 anyone with a south facing wall can grow enough fresh leafy greens to feed a family of 6 for pennies a plate. A constant, year round supply of fresh, nutrient rich leafy greens in your own home. Reduces reliance on single failure operations.

Just like EVERY THING else with the PLP and these grand schemes, I’ll see it when I believe it. Remember the excitement over large tech companies and their sea cables coming to Bermuda from a month ago? Where is that?

This will probably be again the PLP saying something out loud and it never happens. This happens time and time again. It’s all just window dressing for the base.

So now government is using taxpayer money to set up competition for local farmers. There’s already a hydroponic farm in Bermuda and Wadson’s was growing hydroponic tomatoes, although not sure if he still does. If it was easy and lucrative these guys would already have expanded.

Vertical farming doe noy use sunlight, it uses lamps, lamps use electricity, this is expensive. Vertical farming and cost of employment in Bermuda will see the venture losing money.

The fish processing facility introduces a new cost to the customer, so locally caught fish will be more expensive.

Have they thought this through?

So Government is expanding their “expertise” into the private sector? What could possibly go wrong?

Vertical farming went to the Infrastructure Fund for $30m Did they get turned down, and now the Government is stepping in?

Remember the fish processing factory on Morgan’s Point years ago? That didn’t last long. Export? Fishing can’t even supply the local market. Enjoy the coral reefs before they are killed by overfishing.
