While I agree with you in principle, the sad fact remains that we have gone from 12,000 odd hotel beds in the 1980s to less than 4,000 hotel beds now. We did not have enough beds to accommodate the 4,000 odd people who came for the Island Games in 2013! We had to use beds at Warwick Camp and build temporary accommodation at Cedarbridge Academy to accommodate the athletes!

And we now have a Government that is heavily investing in the failing tourism market, so our “national” debt will only get worse.

And for the record, the Government did not mess anything up with the Golden Hind, or Caroline Bay. Unlike the “Grand Atlantic”, now re-named “Bermudian Beach”, those were private investments. The “Grand Atlantic”/”Bermudian Beach” is Government competing with Fairmont, Marriott and the rest of the professional hotel operators in Bermuda.

Very pleased at this report. Work at Fairmont Southampton and Bermudiana Beach will certainly provide jobs for many and once back on line provide beds for tourists and well as hospitality jobs.

The MORGAN’S POINT RESORT ACT 2014 may be helpful in drafting the Act for Southampton Princess. This is a large resort property that already has fringing residential properties developed by West End Properties. It is essential that the principal purpose of this important site is retained as Tourism.

Over the years we have seen conversion of good tourist properties to residential purposes, Palmetto Gardens, Mermaid Beach, Marley Beach, much of Pink Beach to name a few. If we want to stay in the tourism business, and I think we do as it provides good employment opportunities for Bermudians, we must get the Fairmont property redevelopment right and not ‘mess it up’ as we did with Caroline Bay, the Golden Hind/Ritz Carlton etc, a Bermudiana Beach where the buildings are sadly not really suitable for high end tourists as they were designed as affordable homes.
