The enormouse expence pf the prison service should not be placed on the shoulders of the tax payer . as it will appear that the the community is paying the fine to cover the operating costs for 52/7 basically night and day.

A prisons wardens shift work job is not exactly a walk in the park.

The public have done no wrong.

The prison service should be able support it self with a change in the law to collect room and board from and by the prisnor's family for the inmates security at the rate of $566.25 per day. subject to rising labor, building maintenance, food and medical costs.

I had to revise my outdated costs from the 2020/2021 incarceration cost of $152,620 per inmate per year. Here we go! Feel free to check my math.

Referencing the Bermuda 2023-2024 budget Department of Corrections numbers:
- Using the Target Outcome of the daily average of 128 inmates = $206,683.78 per annum per inmate!
- A 34.41% occupancy rate based on a 372-inmate maximum population. (128 / 372)
- Average total cost of incarceration per inmate per annum based on the maximum capacity of 372: 100% occupancy = $71,117 per inmate or $71,117 x 372 = $26,455,524.00 cost.
- $26,455,524.00 / 128 inmates = $206,683.78 per inmate.

5 inmates x $206,683.78 = $1,033,418.91 per year
5 inmates x 10 years = $10,334,189.06
5 inmates x 15 years = $15,501,283.59
etc...

This does not include court costs, such as $2,000,000 (estimated) for putting 5 people on trial. The costs for BPS's involvement in the investigations and arrests are unknown.

It would certainly pay to stop the drugs from coming into Bermuda from overseas airports by paying local police to use drug-sniffing dogs in the passenger waiting area and before baggage is loaded on the plane. Arrest the criminals and the drugs they carry at the departure points and save Bermuda taxpayers millions.
