You will get no argument from me on the promotion of the use of ferries.

My points were (1) both M/V Cecil Smith and M/V Warbaby Fox should still have many good years left in them (but they do not for lack of maintenance) and (2) the Dockyard to St. George’s ferry will be in direct competition with a cruise line ferry that I thought we wanted to keep, not have the PLP Government drive out of business.

The Government has always promoted the use of the ferrys as a means of sightseeing around the islands and sound in direct, and subsised, competition to the island tourboats, which do not recieve any subsidy. This goes back over 50 years in the printed ferry schedules.

"The addition of these two fast ferries will enhance our capacity to accommodate larger cruise ships and provide increased passenger lift between Dockyard and Hamilton, as well as Dockyard and St. George’s"

It would appear that once again the PLP Government want to compete with private industry.

T/V Cecil Smith only 18 years old and should have many years of good life left.

The M/V Warbaby Fox is only one year older and should also have many years of good life left.

Oh, so now the PLP are conceding that the fast ferries purchased by DrEB and the PLP not so long ago were a waste of money and uneconomical to operate.

There are many commercial boat operators who could have told them that, if only they would listen.

So what happens to the slightly used but neglected old boats? Do they get sold off for pennys on the dollar? Are these new boats suitable for the routes and loads they will be used on, or are they another vanity purchase?

What is the breakdown in costs of these boats, built and shipped from the other side of the world? What is the cost of all of the trips taken by various Government officials while these boats were being built amid great secrecy it appears?

Why were these ferries not sourced from the US, saving hundreds of thousands in transportation costs and officials travel costs?

The big question to my mind is will they be properly maintained out of operating hours, or will trips have to be cancelled so that they can be repaired when they break down?
