[From the family]

Millicent Ethelyn Webber, November 19, 1939 – October 8, 2023.

The family of Mrs Millicent Ethelyn Webber is sad to announce Ethelyn’s passing. After gallantly enduring the symptoms of a series of strokes, Ethelyn passed peacefully in the morning of Sunday, October 8th.

The daughter of Elsie Aileen Duerden [nee Astwood] and Floyd Maxwell Foggo “Happy” Duerden, Ethelyn grew up on Mount Hill in Pembroke with her parents, brother Colin, Aunt Muriel and Uncle Charles “Buster” Richardson, alongside her cousins Stanford and Meredith Richardson, with frequent visits from the Astwoods [Uncle Hugh, Aunt Pauline and Cousin Wayne].

Ethelyn was a graduate of The Berkeley Institute, where she was Head Girl. She won the first Berkely Institute Scholarship, and her name tops the Honour Roll for all subsequent scholarship recipients. Ethelyn used that scholarship to attend The University of Wales, Bangor, where she met her husband, Richard. She received her PGCE from the University of London, School of Education.

Ethelyn [or ‘Mrs Webber’ as she was mostly known] was an educator. She taught at the Berkeley Institute and Warwick Secondary School in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s before moving with her family to the UK. In England, she was a stalwart member and secretary of the Women’s Institute, and a teacher at Frome College, Norton Hill in Midsomer Norton and at Clarendon in Trowbridge. Mrs Webber returned to Bermuda in the late ‘80’s to teach Humanities at Whitney Institute until her retirement in the early 2000’s. After retiring she worked as a full-time supply teacher at Clearwater and then part-time supply at both East End Primary and St George’s Prep.

A voracious reader, expert cross-worder and devourer of gin and tonic, Mrs Webber and her husband of 60 years enjoyed travelling, particularly their cruises on the Cunard Line.

Ethelyn leaves behind her husband Richard Webber; her daughters Rachel Cabot and Siân Fleming, and her son Ross Webber. She leaves son-in-law Ian Fleming and daughter-in-law Sarah Webber. She leaves six grandchildren: Benjamin, Helen, Michael, Sam, Alys and Jack; and three great-grandchildren, Santiago, Joshua and Valentina [and one more baby boy born on October 11, 2023].

A celebration service of Ethelyn’s life will be held on Friday, October 13 at 11am at St John’s Anglican Church in Pembroke.
