October 20, 1933 – August 7, 2025.

William “Bill” Cook — known to many as “Cookie” — passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at the age of 91.

Born on October 20, 1933, in Northern Ireland, Bill’s formative years in a working-class Belfast neighbourhood shaped a life defined by resilience, discipline, and drive. He found early purpose in sport, eventually discovering a lifelong passion for bodybuilding and physical excellence.

His dedication paid off: Bill earned the title of Mr. Northern Ireland, placed as runner-up in the 1959 Mr. Britain competition, and received the Most Muscular Man award at an international bodybuilding event in Canada.

It was that same passion for fitness that first brought him to Bermuda, where he worked as a physical education instructor at Westgate Correctional Facility. There, he inspired inmates to strive toward self-improvement through physical discipline and personal effort.

Though he considered returning to Northern Ireland, Bermuda — and the community he built here — became his true home. Bill went on to found the Bermuda Hotel Supply Company, a thriving business that supported a full and adventurous life. He embraced the island’s beauty and camaraderie, becoming an avid golfer, sailor, skier, squash and tennis player. He travelled widely, always chasing new experiences with the same energy he brought to his work and friendships.

Known for his quick wit and dry humour, Bill was a spirited observer of local affairs and a frequent voice on Bermudian talk radio. He never hesitated to share his opinions — always delivered with conviction and a wry smile.

To those who knew him best, Bill was above all a generous and loyal friend. He had an appreciation for the finer things in life, his favourites being oysters and a glass of Cru Champagne, however Bill never forgot his humble beginnings. He was always happiest when sharing with others. Having achieved personal success in life, he chose to give back even in his death, arranging for a generous part of his estate to support causes he cared deeply about.

Bill lived with passion, independence, and integrity. He enriched the lives of those around him and will be deeply missed by all those who knew him in Bermuda and overseas.

In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial will be held at a later date.
