Premier’s Condolences: Death of Barbados Leader
This morning [Oct 23] Premier Dr Ewart Brown extended his condolences on the passing of the Prime Minister of Barbados saying “David Thompson was a personal friend, an ally of Bermuda and a major figure in Caribbean politics. I will cherish the memories of working beside him at Caricom Heads of Government meetings. Our condolences are extended to his family and to the many Barbadians who make their home in Bermuda.”
News reports from the Caribbean say that the 48-year-old Prime Minister passed away at 2:10 am today, just over a month after the country learned he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died at his private residence with his family by his side.
Mr. Thompson was sworn in as Prime Minister on January 16, 2008 becoming Barbados’ sixth prime minister. At a media briefing on May 14th, 2010, Prime Minister David Thompson, accompanied by his personal physician, said that he had been suffering with stomach pains since early March. He also revealed he had undergone tests in Barbados, which were inconclusive, and had travelled with Dr Ishmael to New York where additional tests were carried out. The process of testing would be ongoing and, because of this, Attorney General and Deputy Prime Minister Freundel Stuart would assume his office in his absence.
A short time later Mr. Thompson’s personal physician, Dr. Richard Ishmael, informed the general public that the Prime Minister was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Wow – This is Sad News, I was following his health for a while.
As the Opposition Leader of Bermuda, I join with our Premier Hon. Dr. Ewart Brown in offering condolences to the family of the late Hon. David Thompson; and also extend sympathies to the people of Barbados on the death of their Prime Minister. At age 48 he is an extremely young man and I feel for his family. May he rest in peace.
