Bermuda Near Top of Expat League Table

January 19, 2011

1bermuda_flag_stockIt’s not just visitors who appreciate Bermudians’ legendary reputation for friendliness. According to a international survey issued by HSBC, Bermuda ranks near the top of the global league tables for expatriate workers when it comes to such basics as hospitality, quality of life and family environment.

The international bank interviewed more than 4000 expatriates working in a hundred different countries for its 2010 Expat Explorer — the third such poll HSBC has conducted on the increasing correlation between increasing economic globalisation and increasing migration.

Bermuda ranked number one in the world when it came to the ease with which expatriates make friends in their host countries.

The island placed seventh in the global survey in terms of overall experience for expatriate workers — outranked only by Thailand, Canada, Bahrain, Spain, South Africa and France.

Bermuda sat in the number nine position when it came to setting up in a new community; number 11 on the question of integrating into a new society; and number five in terms of the quality of life enjoyed by expatriate workers.

Salary, accommodation, diet, healthcare, leisure, social and work life were just some of the factors which shaped quality of life results in the Expat Experience survey, said HSBC.

Ease also played a role in results, as respondents also ranked the effortlessness in activities such as adapting to culture, learning the language, and enjoyment in social spheres both private and public.

“The more countries we include, the more useful our surveys can be in helping expats compare life in the country where they are now to a country they are thinking of moving to next,” says Lisa Wood, head of marketing for HSBC Bank International in Jersey.
