Cricket: ICC Americas Defeat Leeward Islands

August 13, 2013

The ICC Americas team — that includes Bermuda’s Kamau Leverock, Delray Rawlins, Christian Burgess and Tre Manders — picked up their first win of the Regional Under-19 Tournament in St. Kitts.

Canadian pace bowlers Stephan Rajasingam and Abrash Khan took three wickets apiece as ICC Americas defeated Leewards by three wickets.

Rajasingam picked up three wickets in his opening burst as Leewards were reduced to 23-4 with Khan picking up the other wicket before returning at the end to collect two more. The early rain reduced the match to a 27 over contest and Leewards never really got into top gear after the loss of their early wickets. Americas were energetic in the field and they worked hard to restrict the Leewards to a total of 113 for 7.

The Americas reply got off to a flying start with Sudeepta Aurka and Shakeel Ahmad both hitting superb boundaries in the opening two overs, Ahmad hit the shot of the day with a huge six over cover off the opening bowler.

With the score at 88 for 2 Americas looked to be cruising to victory but when Taylor fell to a poor shot, caught at deep midwicket, the jitters set in but in the end they got over the line with 3 wickets to spare. Captain Taylor top scored with 34 but it was the bowling earlier in the day that was the difference in the game.

Americas have a bye in the next round before facing Windwards in their next game on Wednesday.
