EMO Meet And Issue TS Gabrielle Update
In anticipation of Tropical Storm Gabrielle, the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) met this afternoon [Sept 10] to assess the storm’s projected course.
As of late this afternoon, the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] advised that Gabrielle’s closest point of approach will be within 25nm at 1.00am tomorrow morning.
Wind speeds are now expected to be between 50-60 knots. The BWS advised that the Island can expect to experience tropical storm force winds and thunderstorm activity which will last through early Wednesday afternoon.
It should be noted that there will be heavy rainfall associated with the storm, with 3 – 5 inches expected.
The Department of Marine and Ports advised that ferry service to St George’s remains cancelled, however other commuter ferry and bus service continue to run as scheduled.
The cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway will arrive tomorrow afternoon.
A decision regarding school for tomorrow will be taken and communicated following the 6.00pm weather advisory.
As a reminder and as a public safety precaution, the EMO is advising motorists, particularly cyclists who are travelling about the Island today to use extra care and caution when traversing the Island’s roads and bridges. Residents should also secure any outdoor furniture, potted plants, garbage bins or other items that could be blown about by the wind.
Meanwhile, the EMO stressed that at this time due to the current forecast, there are no plans to close the Causeway.
The Chair of the EMO and the Minister of Public Safety, Michael Dunkley said, “Gabrielle has proven somewhat unpredictable and so I caution everyone to take this storm seriously and to prepare for the forecast conditions.
“The relevant Government agencies are well prepared as are our private sector partners. People should stay inside and travel on our roads only when absolutely necessary. Everyone should stay safe.”
The BWS will continue to keep the public abreast of the latest forecast regarding TS Gabrielle.
