Rugby: Police Win Men’s & Ladies Titles
Both Police Ladies and Men’s team captured the League Titles at the National Sports Center during Bermuda Rugby Football Union play on Saturday [Mar 8].
In the Ladies Division the Police got tries from Joanne Godfrey and Joanne Hickley in their 2 – 0 win over the Teachers, while the Renegades defeated the Mariners 2 – 0 in the other game with tries from Orla Halpin and Kacie Birch.
After matches were cancelled last week due to inclement weather the much anticipated match between the Police and Teachers took to the field, with the Police going in front in when Paul Davis charge down a kick and went over for a try making the score 5 – 0.
Ronan Kane kicked a very difficult conversion to extend the lead to 7 – 0. The Teachers clawed their way back into the match when Andre Landy went on a run and tossed to Harry Andrews who went over for a try, unfortunately Shauntino Simmons missed the Conversion as the Police held a 7 – 5 lead.
Kane extended the Police lead with a penalty making the score Police 10 Teachers 5. The second half saw Police dominate early, but the Teachers turned the tide and put the Police defense under pressure, camped in the Police 22 for a very tense final ten minutes, however just when it looked as if the Teachers would break through, the Police had a break themselves off a steal, the ball found its way to Davis who went over for the try and the Police lifted the title by one point with a 15 – 5 win.
The other Men’s game saw the Renegades defeat the Mariners 29 – 0. Richard Cumbers led the way for the Renegades scoring 2 tries and 2 Conversions, Tom Healy also added 2 tries and Jahan Cenaio added the other.
