Minister Scott To Attend Meeting In Scotland
The Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports advised that Minister Wayne Scott will be attending the 7th Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Meeting [7CSMM].
The meeting is held every two years alongside the Commonwealth Games, and will be held in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday 21 July.
A spokesperson said, “The meeting focuses on issues affecting the integrity of sport, as well as the important contributions of sport and physical activity to development and peace-building efforts – a field known as Sport for Development and Peace [SDP].
“The meeting provides a valuable opportunity to consider the collective progress of Commonwealth member countries in these areas. Ministers and delegates discuss work carried out in the preceding two years and agree action for the next two years.”
“The Commonwealth Secretariat has organized a full agenda that includes a briefing on progress on Commonwealth Guide to Advancing Development through Sport, Commonwealth Games; Partnership with UNICEF; Governance and Transparency; Safeguarding of Participants and Illegal Betting and Match-Fixing.”
Minister Scott said, “I look forward to the opportunity to meet with colleagues to discuss the way sport is used to promote both social and economic development and to share our challenges and successes.”
Minister Scott along with his Commonwealth colleagues will also meet members of the Scottish Government at a welcome reception at the historic Stirling Castle.
According to their website, “The 7th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, which takes place two days before the official opening of the 20th Commonwealth Games, is an opportunity for Ministers and senior officials from 53 nations to bolster policy and investment in the area of sport.
“Ministers will review national action plans and best practices in the field of sport for development and peace, and international action on integrity in sport, including governance and transparency, the safeguarding of participants, and prevention of match fixing. Creation of legacy opportunities from major sporting events will also be on the agenda.”
Bermuda’s 18-strong team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games consists of Arantxa King, Shianne Smith, Aaron Evans, Harold “Tre” Houston, Tyrone Smith, Shaquille Dill, Nicole Mitchell, Dominique Mayho, Gemma Lightbourne, Micah Franklin, Robert Maycock, Nicholas Kyme, Julian Fletcher, Roy-Allan Burch, Flora Duffy, Tucker Murphy, Tyler Butterfield, and Jonathan Herring.
