88-Year-Old Man Dies Following Traffic Collision
[Updated - Police confirm the death of the man]
An 88-year-old male driver was transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital tonight [Sept 9] following a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a taxi overturning, resulting in the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service extricating the man out of the vehicle.
A police spokesperson said, “At about 9:30pm on Friday September 9th first responders were dispatched to Barnes Corner in Southampton, to a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a taxi.
“Details are sketchy but it appears that the taxi driver was traveling east on Middle Road in Southampton when the driver, a 88 year old man lost control of his vehicle resulting in the taxi overturning.
“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service extricated the man out of the vehicle and he was subsequently taken to the hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.
“The area has been cordoned off whilst the scene is being processed by the relevant officers.
“Police are appealing to witnesses or anyone who may have seen the collision to contact police on 295-0011.”
The BFRS said, “At approximately 9:29pm on Friday, September 9, 2016, the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service responded to a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision near the area of Barnes Corner with persons reported trapped.”
Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Delton White stated that “the Fire Service responded to a serious road traffic collision where a taxi was reported to have collided with a wall and flipped onto its side thus trapping the driver in the vehicle.
“The fire service responded to the incident with two vehicles and nine personnel and had to use specialized Halmatro extrication equipment to free the driver from the vehicle.
“Once the injured person was freed from the vehicle, they were transported to KEMH via ambulance.”
Update Sept 10: A Police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm the death of the 88 year old man who was involved in the RTC that took place today Middle Road in Southampton on Friday evening.
“No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.”
