BPS Confirm: Man Dies After Collision In Sandys
[Updated] The police have confirmed that a man has died following a collision in Sandys this evening [Nov 9].
A police spokesperson said, “Around 9:50pm Thursday, November 9th police and first responders attended a reported serious collision in the Somerset Road, Scaur Hill Drive Sandys parish area, near the ‘Lantana’ property.
“Initial information suggests that a male motorcyclist collided with a truck.
“The rider was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance with serious injuries and sadly, was later pronounced dead.
“Identification of the deceased is anticipated in due course pending notification of his next of kin.
“The relevant police personnel are processing the scene and traffic diversions in the area remain in effect at this time.
“A full investigation into this fatal collision, the 14th of 2017, is underway and any witnesses are urged to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1788.”
This marks the 14th fatal collision of this year, and the third in recent weeks.
Update 1.26am, Nov 10: A police spokesperson said, “Traffic diversions are no longer in effect on Somerset Road, Sandys parish near Lantana.
“The investigation into this fatal collision continues.”
Update, Nov 10, 2.51pm: A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] can now confirm the death of 34 year old Mendell Outerbridge and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends.
“Mr. Outerbridge, said to be from Warwick, was riding a motorcycle along Middle Road, Sandys around 9:50pm on Thursday, 9th November.
“Police officers were conducting laser speed checks at the time and an officer on foot signalled him to stop. Mr. Outerbridge failed to stop and a police vehicle pursued after him, but the rider quickly eluded the police.
“Police officers searched the area to locate the motorcyclist, and a short time later they came upon the fatal scene where Mr. Outerbridge’s cycle had collided with a truck on Somerset Road near the ‘Lantana’ property.
“Mr. Outerbridge was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance where he was sadly pronounced dead.
“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist the deceased’s family at this difficult time. The vehicles involved have been impounded as part of the investigation.
“Under these circumstances, and in keeping with best practice, the BPS has self-referred this case to the Police Complaints Authority [PCA] in order to ensure independence of the investigation.
“The Professional Conduct Unit of the BPS will keep the PCA apprised of all developments as they are established.
“The investigation into this fatal collision, the 14th of 2017, is being led by Inspector Robert Cardwell and Constable Jason Ming of the Roads Policing Unit.
“The police are encouraging any witnesses or anyone with information to contact the investigators on 247-1788.”
