Former BDA Governor Accused of “Living Large”

April 15, 2010

mark capesMark Capes, a former Deputy Governor of Bermuda, has been accused of “living large and in charge” on the Turks and Caicos taxpayers, while simultaneously agreeing to slash civil servants salaries by 10 percent.

Mr Capes also served as Acting Governor of Bermuda for a short time in 2007, following the departure of Governor Sir John Vereker, and prior to the arrival of Governor Sir Richard Gozney.

Following his departure from Bermuda, Mr Capes was appointed as Chief Executive of the Turks and Caicos Islands in October 2009

The Turks and Caicos Sun say that Mr Capes is residing in a $7,000-per month, beach-front penthouse in a gated community at The Pinnacle on Grace Bay, Providenciales.

The Sun go on to say they were “unable to confirm who is paying for Capes’ penthouse, but it highly likely that taxpayers will have to foot the bill.”

In what was described as a “glaring exhibition of double-standards, poor judgment and outright insensitivity”, Mr Capes is alleged to have moved to the luxury accommodation on the exact same day he agreed to the 10% pay cut for Government employees.

A career diplomat, in addition to Bermuda and Turks, Mr. Capes also served in Belgium, Portugal, Croatia, Jordan, Nigeria, Austria, New Zealand, and Anguilla.

Same in Bermuda, except it’s the Government that is showing a “glaring exhibition of double-standards, poor judgment and outright insensitivity”.

    Isn’t politics wonderful.

  2. Rick Olson says:

he is getting a good deal at 7k a month TCI is just as expensive as Bermuda.

    • Chuck says:

Ok but maybe he should pay it himself and not use the Turks and Caicos treasury to pay for two very expensive homes.
