The Bermuda Police Service say they will be “paying particular attention to the offence of impaired driving” as summer approaches.

In this past weekend alone, there were 15 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Of the 15 individuals arrested, 2 individuals passed the alco-analyser test and 2 refused to take it.

2 of the arrestees had over four times the legal limit of alcohol in their blood. The legal limit is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, they registered 337mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and 344mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood respectively.

This is in stark comparison to the previous week [April 5 - 12] when there were no arrests on suspicion of impaired driving.

The Police statement continues on to say:

Road safety remains a high priority and Police will focus on enforcement as well as working with our community partners regarding education to change the behaviour.

The Bermuda Police Service continues to urge the motoring public to be responsible by not drinking & driving. If you must drink, please use a designated driver or alternate transportation (bus, taxi etc.).

UBP Leader Kim Swan, who himself was struck by a drunk driver, recently spoke of the need for improved road safety measures including random Police checks, and fast-tracking of random roadside breathalyzer testing.
