henry-bellingham-officialBritain’s new coalition government has selected Henry Bellingham to become Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, with the responsibility of overseas territories, and therefor Bermuda, falling under his portfolio.

In addition, he is responsible for Africa, United Nations, global economic issues, climate change, conflict resolution, protocol, Ministerial oversight for FCO services and FCO relations with British business.

The 55-year-old Conservative was first elected to parliament in 1983. He attended Eton and then Magdelene College, Cambridge, graduating with a law degree in 1977. He trained at the Inns of Court School of Law, and joined the Middle Temple in 1978 and practised as a barrister for eight years.

His voting record [1][2] shows he voted “very strongly” for the Iraq war and against more European Union integration.

This follows the recent elections in the United Kingdom resulting in a coalition Government formed between the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats, and a new Prime Minister in David Cameron.
