Swimming Team For CAC Games

July 14, 2010

Mr. Ben Smith, Aquatics Manager/National Swimming Coach today announced the team for the CAC Games by saying “Bermuda Swimming is very proud to have a strong team of 6 participating at this year’s Central American and Caribbean Games. The team is made up with swimmers that are very experienced at international competition and they have been training very hard to prepare for this opportunity to compete against the best in our region. Accompanying the team for this meet will be Sue Sharpe as the team manager and me as National coach. We are looking forward to a successful trip and hope to be able to update Bermuda with great results.“

Nick Thomson

  • Nick will be competing in 3 events over the 6 days of the competition. He is a sprint free specialist who has been attending prep school at Mercersburg Academy where this year as team captain his men’s team won the Eastern’s championship. He will be taking his talents to Florida State in the fall where he will be swimming on a scholarship. For now his sights are set on CAC and then the challenge of this year’s Commonwealth games. Nick swims in the most competitive events in swimming the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Julian Fletcher

  • Julian has spent this last season making the transition to University life where he is on the Southern Methodist University swim team. Julian has been a headliner for Bermuda over the last few years with his strong performances in the breaststroke events. He recently won a Bronze medal while at the CISC in Cuba and will be looking to continue his good form in Puerto Rico.

Rebecca Sharpe

  • Rebecca is a backstroke specialist who has been breaking records and winning medals in the backstroke since she was a young age grouper. Rebecca is aiming to close the gap on fellow Bermudian Kiera Aitken and see where she ranks against the best in our region. She has recently finished a successful season at the University of Toronto and was able to bring back 2 silver medals from CISC.

Lisa Blackburn

  • Lisa might be new to the headlines for Bermuda but she has been a medalist at some of the most prestigious meets in the world. Her recent form at the Bermuda Nationals and her big medal haul at CISC have us excited about what might be ahead. Lisa will be swimming in the breaststroke and IM events and she medaled in all of them while at CISC.

Roy-Allan Burch

  • Roy has the honor of being the flag bearer for the Bermuda team in the opening ceremonies and he is very excited to be representing Bermuda. Roy has been training in Germany since September and since being home has been in a rigorous training camp to prepare for good results at CAC and then Commonwealth’s. Roy like Nick is a sprint specialist and will be looking to make his qualifying time for next year’s World Championships and to measure himself against top competition in our region. He was able to bring back a bronze medal from CISC in one of his top events and hopes to report that level of success.

Kiera Aitken

  • Kiera continues to be our golden girl who swims fast times and brings back top results consistently. She is Bermuda’s current athlete of the year and has been on very good form so far this season. After her performance at this year’s CISC everyone is waiting with excitement to see what she will do at CAC. Kiera was the first member of Bermuda swimming to make the new stringent qualifying standards for next year’s worlds while she was bringing home 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals with 2 CISC record times.
