CADA Calls For More Random Road Stops

August 3, 2010

Anthony Santucci CADAAnthony Santucci, the Chairman of CADA – Encouraging Responsible Alcohol Behavior, yesterday [Aug 2] stated, “CADA is very pleased that there were no serious, or fatal, road traffic collisions over the Cup Match Holiday. CADA is also pleased that last weeks Quarterly Crime Statistics Report, issued by the Bermuda Police Service, showed a 6% increase in road traffic enforcement activity compared to this time last year. However, more road traffic enforcement is still needed.”

Mr. Santucci continued, “CADA, whose mandate is Encouraging Responsible Alcohol Behavior, would particularly like to see the use of random stopping of vehicles for the purpose of checking license and registration, as is done in both the UK and in Canada. When these checkpoints have been set up in other jurisdictions, and the public have been given ample notice in advance that the checks will be taking place, there has been a significant reduction in the number of alcohol related road collisions and fatalities.

At these checkpoints every 10th car is stopped for the purpose of checking license and registration and at the same time a determination is made by the police officer as to whether there is reasonable cause to believe the driver is impaired. If the police officer has reasonable cause to believe there is impairment the police officer can perform a roadside test. CADA especially supports their use at particular key times, such as evenings, weekends and holidays. CADA will continue to work with all parties to assist in bringing such safeguards to Bermuda.”
