Sluggo’s Catch Pays Off: $1,000 + Airline Tickets

At a press conference this morning [Aug 3] at Butterfield Bank, Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock received the Safe Hands Award Trophy, a plaque, a $1,000 cash prize, two round trip tickets to one of the gateway cities, a new playing kit and dinner for two at Greg’s Steakhouse.

Mr Leverock won the 2010 Safe Hands Award, as a result of a catch which led to the dismissal of Justin Pitcher on the second day of Cup Match. He becomes he third player behind Janeiro Tucker and Chris Foggo to win the award for the second time. The veteran cricketer, who has played in Cup Match since the 1990s, announced his retirement from Cup Match this past week.

M. Sean Lee, Butterfield’s Executive Vice President, Head of Bermuda Retail Banking said:

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock of Somerset Cricket Club was chosen by the Safe Hands judges to be the Cup Match Classic Safe Hands Award winner for 2010. He accomplished it by way of a brilliant catch in slips which led to the dismissal of Justin Pitcher on the second day of the match.

Dwayne Leverock now joins Janerio Tucker of Somerset Cricket Club and Chris Foggo of St. George’s Cricket Club as a two-time winner of the award. Mr. Leverock previously won in 2001. His selection is also fitting, in that he has recently announced his retirement from the Classic.

Former Cup Match cricketer Dennis Wainwright, standing in for Calvin Symonds, said:

Watching Leverock take that catch was amazing, I told someone after watching Lionel Cann take a catch on the first day, it would take a special catch to beat that one. Leverock took a catch only he could take snatching that ball out of the air with one hand even with the wicketkeeper coming across blinding him for a split second
