Bermuda Hockey League Weekend Reports
Women’s B League, Swallows B vs Canaries B, Final score: 1-0
In the 25th minute, Mallory Towlson from the Swallows opened the game with a penalty corner shot at goal. Even though both teams played ambitiously, neither team could convert any more goals. In the 60th minute Canaries goal keeper, Tami Ray, had an amazing saving of a Swallows penalty corner shot at goal and the game ended 1-0 to the Swallows.
Longtail Canaries B vs Swifts B, Final score: 1-9
Swifts played this match with 10 players and dominated much of the play. Lorina Harvey buried a penalty corner in the 14th minute, Azari Thomas scored a field goal in the 21st minute, a minute later Katie Page of Longtail Canaries took advantage of a mix up in the Swifts defence to convert a field goal and half time saw a 2-1 scoreline to Swifts. Despite again dominating the first 17 minutes of the second half Swifts were unable to find the net, but after Raven Pearman scored Swifts 3rd from close range the floodgates opened. Ryanne Bardgett scored 5 goals in 15 minutes, field goals in the 54th,56th,62nd and 69th minutes and a penalty corner goal in the 61st minute. Lorendae Symonds scored Swifts ninth goal from close range in the last minute of the game to seal the win of 9-1 for Swifts.
Ravens B vs Bluebirds B, Final score: 1-1
Despite Ravens dominating the first 20 minutes, Bluebirds scored first in the 22nd minute when substitute Maria Harris tipped in a field goal past Ravens goalkeeper, Kirsten Faria; as a result of a cross from winger Sarah Smith. Raven’s well deserved equaliser came through Polly Nottingham in the 26th minute as she hit the ball past the Bluebirds’ goalkeeper, Vicki Johnston, to even the score 1-1. Despite several attempts by both teams the score remained 1-1. Some superb saves from both ‘keepers’ kept the score level in this hard fought clash.
WOMEN’S A LEAGUE, Budgies v Wildcats, Final score: 0-2
A scoreless first half saw even play between both teams. Budgies defence held strong and goal keeper, Candace DeSilva, made exceptional saves which allowed the Budgies mid-field to work hard and move the ball up the pitch and the first half remained scoreless. But in the 64th minute of the second half, Wildcats’ Susanna Almeida converted a field goal shot. Budgies tried hard to keep their heads in the game, but it was over when in the 68th minute Almeida doubled the Wildcats lead when she beat the Budgies goalkeeper to the near post to end the game 2-0 for the Wildcats.
Canaries A vs Ravens A, Final score: 2-5
This was a game where Ravens knew they had to win in order to stay in contention of the title. Ravens dominated the first 10 minutes of the game and through their persistence were awarded a penalty corner in the 11th minute but the first shot by Alex Wheatley was saved but she converted her second attempt to open the scoring. Emma Simmons found the target in the 20th minute on a counter attack by scoring a field goal with an assist by junior Kristen Morbey to make it 2-0. In the 23rd minute Joanne Smith-Barrow came back with the first field goal for Canaries but the first half ended 2-1 to Ravens.
In the 43rd minute of the second half Ravens were awarded a penalty corner and it was Megan Troake who would increase Ravens’ lead by 3-1 from a rebounded shot off the ‘keeper’s’ pads. Troake would get her second goal in the 61st and would complete her hat trick in the 64th minute to make the score 5-1. Canaries were unable to convert their 7 penalty corners thanks to some great defending by Ravens, but were awarded a penalty stroke in the 70th minute which Mary-Ellen Jackson put past Ravens keeper, Juliette Oatley, to make the final score 5-2 to Ravens.
Swallows A vs Swifts A, Final score: 3-1
Swifts started brightly with Lorina Harvey shooting wide from a penalty corner in the 3rd minute. Five minutes later Iman Smith also shot wide from a penalty corner. Swallows Jennifer Chisnall then converted their second awarded penalty corner in the 16th minute. Swifts wasted 2 more penalty corners in the 16th minute when Emily Chadderton’s shot was saved and the 18th minute when Ryanne Bardgett shot wide. Bardgett scored in the 20th minute to tie up the game at 1-1, and Swifts kept out Swallows penalty corner in the 26th minute to end the first half all tied up.
In the 41st minute of the second half, Bardgett wasted a golden opportunity as a result of her one on one challenge with the keeper and her shot going wide. Swallows then dominated proceedings gaining penalty corners in the 42nd, 43rd, 50th, 55th, and 56th minutes and managing to convert a penalty shot on goal in the 50th minute by Jennifer Chisnall. Swallows Kyla Kellman deservedly scored a field goal in the 63rd minute and in the dying minutes Swifts Bardgett again shot wide, but it was Swallows who would seal the win of 3-1.
MEN’S LEAGUE, Rebels vs Upstarts, Final score: 2-3
Upstarts started off short with an 8 men team, and Rebels took advantage of this as Scott DeCosta scored from field goals in the 1st minute and John Richmond in the 13th minute. Rebels had many chances of increasing their lead, but failed to capitalize on that, but remained ahead 2-0 at the half. In the second half Upstarts had a full side and came alive and it was Gary Tavares who scored a field goal in the 40th minute, a well executed penalty corner shot in the 42nd minute and Tavares would complete his hat trick in the 59th minute through a field goal shot to make the score 3-2 in favour of Upstarts. After coming from behind they were the winners.
