ICC Training Squad: Sluggo, Romaine & Cann
The Bermuda Cricket Board announced the training squad preparing to compete in the ICC World Cup League Division 2 Tournament in Dubai in April, 2011. Bermuda will compete against UAE, Namibia, Uganda and two teams from the ICC WCL Division 3 Tournament.
Those named include veterans Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock, Irving Romaine and Lionel Cann, as well as Malachi Jones and Rodney Trott.
National Coach David Moore stated:
The squad has been selected to cover all positions thoroughly, to provide competition to all players and to reward players that have been previously outside the squad for their performances during last years? domestic season and the All Star series. It is encouraging to see five players from the U19 program as part of the squad and with the addition of some more experienced players the squad is gaining a nice balance.
Leading into the World Cricket League (WCL) Qualifiers in Dubai the team has a heavy training and playing commitment that includes a potential trip to Dubai for a camp and matches in December and January as well as a heavy domestic training program which includes technical, tactical and strength and conditioning sessions. This will require a high level of commitment from all players.
The team philosophy and culture that we are building together has not changed and will not change. Only those players that are willing to commit to the program, the team and the supporters of Bermuda cricket will be selected in the final team. This group must understand and appreciate the important role that they will play in determining the international cricket future of Bermuda. The standards that have been set are extremely high and only those that can achieve and maintain them will make it through. The players understand that their ability or potential makes up only a very small amount of what it will take to make the final cut and I firmly believe that those players that make it will have demonstrated the commitment and hard work required to be at the top of their game to compete internationally.
