‘Spirit’ Briefly Grounded on Reefs
The “Spirit of Bermuda” sail training vessels ran aground off St. George’s earlier this week and one person aboard the 112-foot schooner was treated for minor injuries after falling and sustaining bruising.
A duty officer at the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said: “The Spirit Of Bermuda briefly grounded on reefs at the East end of the island on Tuesday with 33 persons onboard.”
“A dive survey in St. Georges harbour on Wednesday revealed that only minor damage was sustained to the vessel and one passenger was taken to the doctors as a precaution as she had fallen during the grounding and suffered a bruise. The vessel was able to continue with her programme without any further problems.”
Launched in 2006 and operated by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, the “Spirit of Bermuda” is an educational vessel intended to introduce its crews of young Bermudians to the island’s maritime heritage.
The replica of a 19th century Bermuda “ballyhoo” schooner, the “Spirit was designed by celebrated American naval architect and longtime Newport-Bermuda race participant and official Bill Langan who died recently.
