Photos: Southampton Railway Trail Cleanup
This past Saturday [Feb 19] The Fairmont Southampton Green Team joined Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] in a cleanup of the Southampton section of the Railway Trail from Camp Hill to St. Anne’s Road.
The cleanup was held in conjunction with the Catholic Diocese; young people, along with their families, also participated as part of their confirmation requirements to fulfill community service hours. A total of 79 people from the various organizations participated.
Participants worked from 9am to 12noon under sunny skies and collected a total of 81 bags of garbage, 60 bags of recyclables and several large piles of bulky items, including a car engine, windows, a microwave and television and even a kitchen sink.
Anne Hyde, executive director of KBB, said, “We are delighted to have the annual involvement from the Catholic Diocese on this cleanup, and now the participation of The Fairmont Southampton as well. This is a beautiful section of the Railway Trail but is a trouble spot for people dumping large items of trash. We are pleased that The Fairmont Southampton has adopted this section of the trail as part of our Rock Watchers program. They have taken on the ongoing responsibility of maintaining this area.”
The Fairmont Southampton Green Team included 19 employees who worked along the trail between the hotel property up to Riviera Crescent.
Rita Healy, hotel manager at The Fairmont Southampton, said, “The involvement of The Fairmont Southampton Green Team in activities such as this cleanup of the Railway Trail not only supports Fairmont Hotel & Resorts’ goal to minimize our impact on the planet, but it also gives us an opportunity to keep Bermuda, and our neighbourhood, clean and beautiful for our guests, local residents as well as ourselves. We are pleased to help make a difference and look forward to holding regular cleanups to maintain this section of the Railway Trail.”
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ has implemented the Green Partnership Program, a comprehensive approach to reducing the hotels’ impact on the environment. The program focuses on improvements in the areas of energy and water conservation, waste management, and innovative community outreach programs involving local groups and partnerships. The program is recognized by a number of international organizations including the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Ad Age and Strategy Magazines.

Glad to see this. Have taken part in a KBB clean up myself. Never fails to stun me how some elements throw their trash into public areas. Go to any popular fishing spot and enjoy the empty liquor containers and discarded fishing lines. Sad.

Unfortunately the ‘proud ones’ responsible for this mess in the first place will simply see the now lovely clean area as an opportunity to give someone a job to do and it will return quickly to what it was before.
