Attorney General Visits Drug Treatment Court
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Michael Scott offered words of encouragement to clients of the Island’s Drug Treatment Court yesterday [Mar.2]. During his first visit, Minister Scott presented certificates of completion to several clients who’d completed various stages of recovery.
The Bermuda Drug Treatment Court Programme [DTC], a division of Court Services, commenced in October 2001. The programme is a major component of the ‘Alternatives to Incarceration Initiative’. It was created to handle cases involving drug using offenders through comprehensive supervision, drug testing treatment services and immediate sanctions and incentives.
The DTC team consists of representatives from the Judiciary, the Department of Court Services, the Department of Public Prosecutions, Legal Aid/defense counsel, substance abuse treatment providers and the Bermuda Police Service. The Attorney General is pictured below with the Drug Treatment Court Programme team which comprises of a cross-section of Governmental departments.
During Wednesday’s session, two clients completed the fourth phase of the programme, with one being recognised for being clean for 20 months and never incurring an infraction during his course of treatment.
Along with offering congratulatory remarks to the graduates, Minister Scott encouraged all of the court’s clients to continue fighting their addiction and urged them to become positive citizens in the community, especially the men.
“You are fathers, husbands and breadwinners. You are vital in this community and we need you to take your rightful place as leaders. Take advantage of this positive opportunity and any others that come your way.”

So in the interests of transparency & accountability and to avoid any hints of hypocrisy when will the PLP MPs lead by example and submit to drug testing?
