This past Saturday [Feb.26] The Bermuda Junior Golf Associations golfers visited Belmont Hills Golf Course, off the Blue tees Julien Papadopoulo shot 80 to defeat Matthew Smith by 6 strokes. Papadopoulo turned around a 2 shot deficit from the first 9 holes with a fine 1-over back 9. In his round Papadopoulo birdied the par 11th hole and the par 4 16th to go with 9 pars while Smith birdied the par 4 1st hole and had 7 pars.
Off the White tees Daniel Hetzel shot 82 to win his group by 5 strokes over Khari Place in second. Place got off to a good start on the front 9 shooting a 3-over 38 for a 2 stroke lead over Hetzel at the turn. Hetzel proved the steadier player over the back 9 as Place couldn’t maintain his good play. Hetzel had birdies at the par 3 7th and par 5 12th holes to go with 7 pars while Place had a birdie at the par 5 6th hole to go with 7 pars of his own. Evan Watkins claimed third place shooting matching 44’s over the front and back 9 to finish on 88 1 shot behind Place. Watkins matched Place with birdie at the par 5 6th hole and 7 pars.
In the 18-hole Red Tee group Elizabeth Parsons opened strongly with a group best 4-over 39 on the front 9. Though not able to this level of play over the back 9 none of the other competitors in the group were able to catch her and she ran out to a comfortable 6-shot win. Parsons has a birdie at the par 4 2nd hole and 3 pars in her round. Her nearest competitor, Mikus Ming, did make a charge closing within 2 shot by the last hole but struggled on #18 to fall back. In the battle for third place Evan Hughes edged Brady Cordeiro on retrogression after a late surge from Cordeiro saw him make up 3 shots on #16 and #17 to pull even.
In the 9-hole Red Tee group Alex Mason’s steadier play saw him shoot 52 and win the group by 2 strokes over Tevin Smith. A fine par on #9 saw Smith jump into second ahead of Joe Waters by 1 stroke and Liam Perry, in fourth, by 2.
